Maybe print out the call sign and carefully cut it out over masking tape and create a real stencil?

Jim

Excellent idea Jim....I am a big fan of realistic stencilled call signs!

BTW, some 'free' stencil fonts here , or Google 'stencil fonts'.
You have to d/l them and transfer them to the Word font file...somehow . I did it once before but it's been a while!

Thanks guys for the ideas on the fronts for the numbers. I decided afterall not hand paint the numbers once I started tolook closer at the model. I may just leave off the the side hull ones. Once I weather and dust everything they may just fade away. The on the rear ramp I'm still deciding if I want to add that one, more surface area to work with.

Well I very close to completing this model. So far I have begun the weathering with dust and mud using buff paint, plaster of paris and mig pigments. I've also began to paint some of the crew gear to add to the model. I've scratch built the lwn chair since most of the time when we went to the field, we took a few things just to make it little bit more comfortable for us. More to follow soon.

Really nice work...the lawn chair looks great!

The FN Rifle does look out of place...it was replaced by the C7 in about 1985/1986.

Nice work, especially the weathering, not overly done.

For the freedom of the city parade in Calgary 1987 we had the FN, but by 1988 the C-7 was standard.

I have a few FNC1's and Sterlings in the spares box as well just waiting for the right project LOL.

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I know this would of been a newer vehicle, so I'm trying to keep the weathering down to mostly mud and dust since every vehicle returning to the wash rack was always covered in the stuff. I'm not sure how the supply system works in canada, but if it's anything like our system, it sucked then and still sucks now.

Really supply system working..............right Either way I'm going to keep the C1 in place since I'm doing 85/86 time frame. I can see the crew picking up a new vehicle, but not new weapons espcially in germany were it take a while for things to filter over there. By the way what kind of rations did canda use during the 80's? The box on top of the hull is really a K-rat that I tried to turn into C-rat.

Cheers

When I joined the military in 86 the field rations were the same as we have now, just different meal choices. Macaroni and cheese with peas anyone?

Your 1985/1986 timeline for the FNC1 is fine. What might be a minor timeline issue is the upgrade to the actual M113A2...with the external fuel tanks. I don't recall seeing many if any upgraded M113A2s with the external fuel tanks until about 1987/1988. Doesn't mean it didn't happen earlier. Overall a really nice project...great to see another modern Canadian AFV.

The rations are fine...trading rations happended in Canada and Germany....love the little bottles of Tabasco sauce!

A box of Canadian rations during RV 87 would get you a cot from the Americans LOL.
