Hi guys.
Does anyone know if there is an engine I could use to put in my BRDM-2? I am not to bothered if it is historically accurate, I dont mind if its not a Russian engine. (although I hear it uses a GAZ-41 gasoline V-8 engine). I just want something to fill the gap, as long as it fits.
Thanks
Euan

totally inaccurate, but Legend makes a resin Stryker engine. I am not aware of any BRDM-2 engines off hand

... Legend makes a resin Stryker engine...

That won't work either. They don't look the part, and I photographed it for Legend a few years ago - far too large.

Since you need a V-8 gas motor, I'd try a Snap-tite NASCAR model first. I grafted one into a 1/32 Malibu Police Cruiser. They're pretty easy to find. If it's too small (but I think it'll be just right) you can try any of a number of AMT/ERTL 1/25 car kits. A lot of them have V-8s.
I think you'll have better luck with the 1/32 motor. Fortunately the BRDM-2 motor's valve covers are smooth, so rounding the appropriate sized evergreen stock should give you the right look in minutes. Once you find the right return roller for the air cleaner you're in business.

Like I said, the lack of fins on the valve covers should make this an easy conversion. The photos are missing the round air cleaner on the carburetor, but that's an easy fix.

This will help, although they can be found in the 5-8 dollar range. You can still build the car and never miss the engine.

The best thing I've found to replicate the Gaz-41 V-8 is from the BM-21 Grad. Its engine is a ZiL 375 V-8, and the valve covers already look close to what you want. The question is, do you want to bogart the motor from it to use in your BRDM-2. I say with a little work it'll be a nearly spot on replica. I'm looking at it right now, and it certainly has potential.

Thanks so much Frenchy, again, you have come to my aid. Is there nothing you can't find pictures of? Also, Robert, the suggetion of using a Zil engine is a great idea. Does the Alanger Ural 4320 have an engine with it?
Thanks again

I don't know if ICM and Alanger are the same molds. The Ural 4320 is supposed to have a diesel in it, which bears little resemblance to what you need. But since I have a few lying around I looked and wouldn't you know, it's the same engine they put in their BM-21 Grad kit. So if you have either one you have a good basis for the motor. The fan and pump belts are even very similarly arranged.

Nice photos. Of course one more option would be to model the empty engine bay if you don't want to go out and purchase an extra kit. It could be equally interesting.
I took this from where the engine should be, looking forward and to the right. In fact, the whole gutted vehicle would be pretty interesting.
