Hi guys,

Below you'll find a picture I took while I was in Afghanistan.
I would like to ID the hull of this tank. In the back you can see a T-54 turret but the hull with the reinforced frontal armor doesn't seem to be from a T-54

Hi Patrck

It's a T-62 M lower hull

Hmm the wheel spacing kinda doesn't look right for a T-62. Maybe its just a trick of the photography, but the gap between the second and third wheel mount looks quite short.

here a thread about the m/m1 version

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/170825

Rob, considering that near the 4th wheel the hull changes its cross section (as you can notice It becomes sharper and larger) , that must be a T-62 hull. In my humble opinion it can't be a T-54/55 wreckage. Furthermore that additional armour on the front lower hull was typical of T-62M

OK. Thanks for the info so far.

I didn't mention this in my first post, but apart from the BTR-60 wreck in the back there were no other wrecks, hulls or turrets in the region.
I don't have any solid explanation why this T-62 hull is lying next to a T-54 turret, without a T-62 turret and a T-54 hull.
There were no visible impacts on the turret or the hull.

I added one more picture of the hull to help ID it.

So could it be technically possible to retro-fit a T-54 turret onto a T-62M hull??

Cheers

A pic from the rear of the hull would have ID this hull no prob Patrick..
On first glance i would have said T-55, finding it difficult to see T-62 wheel spacing on this hull. I know it probably is due to what Mauro has already pointed out. The Soviets never deployed T-55m with additional armour package in Afghanistan

AH, the rear pic!!!! Not T-62!!, no rear fan hump. sorry it never loaded as i added my initial response....now it tells its T-54.... judging by lack of bolts on final drive housings.

Interesting... going through my Afghan T-54/55 folder there seem to be quit a few 54/55's with belly armour fitted. Never noticed that before.

@Andy: Cheers mate. Thx for ID-ing the hull.
@Erik: yes indeed. I also have a lot of T-55 Pics with the bow armor.

Below a picture I took last year in A'stan of an Afghan BTS-4 wreck also with the reinforced frontal armor.

Rear pic has really made the difference! Thanks a lot for sharing, and yes, I was wrong! That's a t-54 (or 55?) hull with a rare belly armour. it would be interesting to know if it was an improvment coincived only for the Afghan campaign

Interesting, thanks for clearing that up, I was almost 99.9% certain it was not a T-62 as I first mentioned.

Pretty cool to see the belly armour added to T-54/55's.

Rob, In your opinion was the belly armour added for what?

Was the only modifications made on these exemplars? I might be wrong but that front lower hull looks quite strage to me...
