For the ground, I bought a plaque from a trophy store. I carved out the main shapes from styrofoam, and put a thin layer of modelling clay over the whole surface. I sculpted in the details, like the shallow ditches on the sides of the road, the little erosion canyons on the sides of the hills, and the tire tracks on the road. I glued on rocks and bits of old sisal rope for the vegetation, then painted it and applied a lot of pigment powders.
