Looking at the sprue shots and the instruction sheets for this new Hobby Boss offering it would appear that they have created some sort of domed metal "weather cover" to go over the gun ring opening in the roof of the cab.

Correct me if I am wrong but I do not believe such a device ever existed. Every enclosed cab vehicle outfitted with the opening for the gun ring that I know of has had a canvas cover that tightly tied with a draw string around the outer lip of the circular cab roof gun opening.

I have seen some canvas covers that also have a single bow (wooden I assume) that is snapped into the inside rim of the cab roof opening that then arches upwards to give the canvas a bit of an arch to better assist in water run off.

I do not know where HB got their reference for including a domed metal lid to cover this opening. Perhaps I missed this detail during my research.

the ITALERI CCKW kits were also sold under the old (and nearly impossible to find) PEERLESS MAX label. Other manufacturers include TESTORS, and TESTORS/ITALERI, in various different re-boxings.

The Peerles Max kits predate the Italeri. and the Italeri tooling for the GMC 6x6 is not the Peerless Max tooling. The exterior dimensions of the Italleri and Peerless cabs are very close. Comparing them I could not see any difference. The Peerless cabs are slightly heavier (thicker walls). Overall the Peerless has a more substantial appearance. To me the Italeri looks more like the real truck, although the difference is slight.

Some other Italeri kits, for instance, the Dodge Ambulance, the Dodge 6x6, the CMP 15cwt truck, and the CMP gun tractor are Peerless Max tooling. There are a few others.

I stand corrected regarding the ITALERI Deuce being a re-boxing of the old PEERLESS MAX kit. Thought it was, but apparently, not...

As to the ITALERI kits of the various WC-series Dodges, let me just say that the SKYBOW/AFV CLUB kits are much nicer. I just wish that AFV CLUB would get off their duffs and supply us with new kits of the WC-54 Ambulance, the M6 Motor Gun Carriage (M6 Tank Destroyer, mounting the 37mm Anti-Tank Gun), "state-of-the-art" M3/M3A1-series "Stuart/Honey" Light Tanks, and the M8 HMC (75mm Howitzer Motor Carriage) that they decided not to produce.

I'm not holding my breath for those kits from AFV CLUB. I've written and emailed them repeatedly, to no avail. Not so much as even a single "courtesy" response from them...

Hi, Mike! HOBBY BOSS MAY have looked at a Jimmy with a "field mod"...

Who knows? Sometimes model company engineers resort to "artistic license" when it comes to accuracy... It's like when a kid in school "fudges" an answer on a test, hoping to get by with a bit of "BS" in order to get a passing grade. I'm not saying that HOBBY BOSS did this specifically with their Jimmy kits- But, in all fairness, they could have done MUCH BETTER in their execution of the GMC/Chevrolet "Hard Cabs" and associated parts...

Hello, would Italeri Kit #6271 contain the appropriate donor cab for this 352 w/machine gun?

I concur. Should work just fine. You will have to cut the Italeri engine oil pan out from between the fenders (they are molded as one piece) but everything else will work A-OK.

If you can, consider using the HobbyBoss firewall. It is very nicely detailed.
