HI Mike and other scratch and conversion enthusiasts -

This build is based on a photo I saw but from a somewhat questionable source - in as much as, I can't read the language - and can't tell what is being said, I am not too keen on posting the image - it is current though, and somewhere between Iraq and Syria.

I involves a M1165A1 and squad - The M1165A1 is the newer version that we have seen in the past of the GMV/DMV - heavily armed, beefed up suspension and so on. This will make its way into a dio in just such a theater of operations, but that't not for now.

Today, the conversion and scratch work - starting with Academy M1151 kit, and lots of changes from there. A few new parts, but mostly from the stash, junk box and just raw materials.

A few years back I purchased some images from Robert Skipper (18Bravo) that are great references in general and very much so on this!

In addition to adding parts, I lowered the suspension - this will be loaded up and i don't want it to be riding high - please take a look:

Ok - I took these it's been primed and base coat applied - it has some Interior details added - maybe I'll post next time

cheers

Nick

Great work Nick, that one is really a heavyweight!

I very much like the idea of compressing the suspension to take into account the fully loaded mass of the vehicle!

A couple of recent small freelance projects just to try and get the model building juices flowing again.

A "powder and shot" horse drawn caisson using some left over limbers from the Tamiya German Field Kitchen sets. This one is totally "imagineered" so I am positive there are many things incorrect about it. Please be kind but I invite all comments on this project so that I might learn more about this interesting subject. (I have found many photos online of limbers with a spare wheel mounted at a 45 degree incline on the back of the second unit but only one photo showing a vertical spare wheel mounted as below with some sort of A-frame support structure. However, now I can no longer find that photo online - HELP!)

__________________________________________________________________

The second is a project I started some time ago: The late war, rubber tired, German Field Kitchen that could be towed behind a motor vehicle at speed without having to be "loaded in the back of the truck."

The fenders are cut down Opel Blitz rear truck fenders. The wheels and tires are also out of the spares box.

Again all comments welcome.

Hi Mike - thanks! Glad you like this so far - I appreciate your word choice too - this truck is a heavyweight! Lol - yes, lowering the suspension was important for this to sit properly - and yes, with all four wheels touching the ground!! As a fellow truck guy, I thought you might like this project -

I like you freelance builds too! Those are fun to tackle while not requiring months and big $$$ to do! Nice work on both projects -

Cheers

I like your free lance builds,Mike-especially the "kleine Feldküche"!

Nick, stunning detail on your multi media conversion!
Looking at the pictures- it's pitty all the various media will be covered by paint and weathering...

Some pictures of a conversion I finished this spring: the Soviet SG-122(A).
I used 2 Zvezda kits(StuG III Ausf.F-a repack of an old Dragon offering and the M-30 howitzer) along with scratchbuild casemate and gun mount/armor shield:

Angel that model is EXCELLENT! Makes me want to build one. Outstanding work!

Building that casemate must have been a real challenge!

Angel I am really impressed with your bakery wagon. I am beside myself over the hand cut raised, embossed lettering!.

I once did a scratch and vac-form Bussing-Nag but chickened out on the raised letting needed for the front bumper!

As this thread is dedicated to scratchbuilding projects, just check out Nacho Inigo's Vespa TAP 150 military scooter

A tiny (but real ) masterpiece IMHO

Hi guys - wow - lots of Nice! Work going on here! Angel - your trailer is great - I particularly like the nuts and bolts along the sheet metal ends - not easy to do. The whole unit looks great (so does the tank!)

Frenchy - thanks for posting the link to the scooter build - downright inspiring work - wow!

Angel - thx for your thoughts on the hmmwv - while not a scratch project, the conversion has included a variety of visually contrasting materials - I sometimes think twice about painting them over! Now - its painted - and I don't want to add the weather!! Haha - too bad - looks like stormy weather -

Cheers

Nick, Angel, everyone; I consider what I am about to show you to be, in no way, on a par with the work you guys are currently doing but still, I would like to share my current project.

Roden's Opel Blitz Radio Bus with scratch built generator trailer:

I guess this is more a straight kit (hobby manufacturer's conversion) than a home built conversion per se, but I have, of course, added additional underbody detail, interior and roof bracing, duck boards down the center aisle, a number of figures and more appointments overall.

All exterior doors and windows will be posed in the open position to better see the interior detail.

Note package tray added above side windows. (I know the regular bus had them so I suspect they survived the conversion.) This tray is perfect for helmets, web gear, Enigma code books, etc, etc.
(FYI - Figure painting IS NOT my forte!)

The overall fit of this Roden kit is quite good. With just a little filing and fitting the main body shell can be made to snap on and off without gluing!
___________________________________________________________________________

Interior wall bracing, ceiling panel divisions, dome light bases, package tray, ventilator and escape hatch have now all been added to the interior.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Additional frame members added to the base kit frame are shown in white. This created the proper "C" channel profile to the main lengthwise frame members. To this I also added fuel filler pipe, fuel line, wiring for fuel gauge sender and wiring for rear taillight plus installing drain plugs on the differential, engine and transmission.
______________________________________________________________________________

More underbody floor bracing shown in white. (Makes the underside of the vehicle much more visually interesting - and correct - if you are into that sort of thing.):

And what I have heard at times called "duck boards". I can verify that the ambulance buses had them - cannot seem to find photos of the radio bus interior. I am sure the Germans have some long combined name for them translating to something like "wooden structure to prevent slipping on wet floors".

"Wassen stompers"

p.s. To the engine I also added a Verlinden Blitz battery and radiator overflow tank as well as fabricating the voltage regulator, ignition coil, circuit breakers and dip stick. (Sorry but I am not big on doing spark plug wires!)

Mike,

I have the earlier version of the Kraftomnibus from Roden.
2 months ago I've build it close to 90%, but then had other pressing projects and it stayed abandoned.
In other words-collecting dust...

In my build I failed to modify the frame elements and missed some other tiny bits, so now-thanks to your stunning radio bus- the KOM comes next on my to-finish list.

Hi Mike - your bus is looking great - nice chassis work - I like seeing and trying to do that level of work. Seems I like trying a bit more than out of box these days - i like the challenge, and you're good at it!

Ok - brief update on the HMMWV - first painting now done - you'll see, more or less OK, detail touch up to follow - you'll also see a few areas where I spaced out a bit...which need paint other than/in addition to the base! Next..weathering...

Please take a look:

I sort of like the look with no top....maybe another time?

I decided to beef up the turret a bit, so, added more metal...again from some other project...

Above, you'll see the basic chips added along the running board/ammo tray

above, you'll see the interior of the roof - added all sorts of stuff - again, based on the 18Bravo pics....

and finally - not conversion or scratch, but the guys to be used with this in a dio:

These four guys seem to be ubiquitous among us model builders...Legend and Black Dog classics....they're ok - the weapons are a pain to build on each - I've built them before - and they fix up pretty nicely...just seem to see them alot!

OK - happy model building!

Nick

Excellent job on both vehicle and figures,Nick!
Those scratches on lower body and fenders are top notch!

I've finished construction on my scratchbuild Sd.Ah.106.
Primed all metal parts with Mr.Hobby Metal Primer, so next step will be painting:
