Memories of Matchbox

WOW, AJ, you're right, this has exploded. I feel challenged, do I do the F3D in White and dayglow, the SBC with yellow wings and rigging or try to complete my first ship since my teens?

Nice to see the action in this thread staying lively, usually a good omen for a campaign.
@(Weathering_one) AJ,
How original, another Challenger? I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen a Matchbox Abrams but i’ve heard of the T-80. According to my book the former is an old ESCI kit make under licence and the latter a somewhat “crippled” former Revell kit also marketed under a few other Brands.
@(md72) Mark,
FWIW, my vote is for the F-3D as I don’t recall ever seeing one of those.
@(Robbd01) Robbie,
Not too sure about the 232 kit but I built the Panzer II kit and it was really nice. I've seen the Panzer II's entered in a number of model shows over the years and these Matchbox versions are usually the base kit the builders use. The Wespe PK-77 uses a similar chassis and is also extremely nice.
Cheers,
--Jan

I did see the Wespe kit up on ebay but most were a tad pricey. I may still eye ebay and maybe one cheaper might show up. Currently the only Matchbox armour kit I have done in recent years (ok decades) is the M-7 Priest. I thought the Wespe would make a good addition to it.

Very interesting Tat, quite a difference from what you did in the first campaign.
We had two of the Pumas in the first.

Welcome aboard to all the newbies!!
Great to see so many people getting into the mood and also buying kits as well. If you buy it for the GB, you have to build it!!!
Some of the original Matchbox kits are getting pricey, but don't forget Revell has reissued some of these too and they are not too badly priced as an option, especially if you buy other stuff to spread the postage:

Thanks Jan. LOL, I thought of staying away from rubber band tracks this time around. I may try a wingy-thing as well if I can get one. Cheers, Tat

Already been eyeing that after I switched from searching just for Matchbox only. For about .50 cents more I can get one out of Cali which will be much more quicker then Lucky M's slow boat from China. However you being in OZ it prolly be more quicker.
Cheers

That's the spirit Matthew, show them "Mouldy Goldies"! Now where was that M-19 during the MNC?
Yes, the car is certainly more mouldy than goldie. The M-19 has always been at the back of the queue, with the Priest and the Panzerjaeger clearly in front; there's something kind of unexciting about it... that big empty trailer, one figure, and the featureless "squashed turd" base
Tat's choice of the Puma for example has the fancy base and the three figures, all ready for a proper diorama - the bonus of the smaller vehicles, where there was a lot of plastic left over for the other bits.
I hadn't realised the extent to which Revell had continued to use the Matchbox brand to release kits from moulds that originated from other manufacturers. I was looking at the Yak 15 for example, and see that it was originally some Korean brand, and then I suppose that the Abrams and T-80 are also not "genuine" Matchbox, ie not designed when Lesney owned it. Am I correct in thinking that the Challenger was the last Lesney produced 1/72 tank kit?

Matthew,
Welcome to the "sordid" reality of the Revell purchase of Matchbox. According to "The Book", the Yak 15 as well as a few other aircraft released post 1992 were from the Turkish PM company located near Istanbul. The T-80, Abrams, Leopard II, Stug IV and a Sherman M4 are all ex-Ace via Revell post '92. To further muddy the waters, Revell had ICM produce a number of Matchbox aircraft and they also had the M3 Honey but most of the moulds were not returned to Revell when ICM went bankrupt and the Russian company Alanger has refused to return them after buying the liquidated ICM. BTW, that's why it seems the Honey kits are rather rare to find these days. Oh and just to add more to this quagmire, Revell also released a number of former FROG aircraft post '92 under the Matchbox label.
Cheers,

Thanks Jan, that makes this as clear as..... mud..... it is a real quagmire all right.
Shame about the Honey and aircraft moulds. Wonder if they are still in a warehouse somewhere.
Matthew, how about some inspiration:
Find an old ESCI Bishop (which you can enter into the Italy 1942-1945 GB too) and you would have a nice little duo. Nothing to stop you fixing the 'turd' to a wooden base and expanding that out a bit with some plaster or air drying modelling clay for a larger footprint and adding some little details and scenery.
Hint, hint...

Whoops. Got busted by my son. I was going through his stash out in the garage to see what I might have given him. Seems those couple of aircraft I found earlier were actually his. In negotiations over price at the moment... He is 18 and thanks to his High School education, he has learned about supply and demand pricing. Of all the things to remember from school.
I think I might have to educate him about how the ATM (Bank of Dad) can run out of money at crucial times... like college break....

Matthew, how about some inspiration:
Peter, that is a great photo; interesting shot of the camouflage, that I assume has been given that faded look above the wheels by a heavy layer of dust. I have to admit I can't see myself buying yet another kit to put on the back, I expect I could resurrect one of the Matchbox tanks I completed all those years ago as a short cut. I wonder how they got that Jagdpanther in the IWM back... the tracks are horrible but nowadays something might be done about that. (Edit: wrong mantlet...)
Yes, odd about the Honey getting separated and lost like that, it was a nice kit. Also odd how Revell continued to use the Matchbox label in that way, instead of putting them under their own brand, I wonder what the thinking was.

This is gonna be fun!
I've never been part of a campaign build before
I have zero Matchbox or Revell models, so I'm going to start searching around and see what I can find. Thinking something really off the wall and probably non-military to let my creativity run wild...

It's on of my favourite Pics Matthew. It is why I hope to do one day.
At 45 tons, he JP might have been a tad over the 40 ton capacity of the M9 trailer. But with no tracks, and no schurtzen ….maybe
Welcome Brandi.
Will look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Welcome to the wild and wooly world of campaigning and especially Matchbox. So you might be interested is something non-military? Just to give you and others some options, have a look at these pages of kits for something different.
MBox-1 by Jan Etal, on Flickr
MBox-2 by Jan Etal, on Flickr
These pages come from "The Book" and refer to the Glory Days of 1979-80 when Matchbox teamed up with AMT to increase the model range of both companies. Some of these kits were labeled with the joint name of Matchbox/AMT! To add further to the confusion, Matchbox and the Italian ERTL briefly also had exchange arrangements.
There is also the Matchbox ranges of ships and 1/12 scale Motorbikes (if you can find any? )

I am glad you have that book Jan. No way I would know any of these were Matchbox affiliated.
That is going to widen the field of options considerably. I think I may need you to make a ruling or two in future...

I've got several of the Matchbox 1/700 ships in the stash. Currently on their HMS Kelly for the MTO campaign. I'd say they're as good as the older Tamiya, Aoshima and Fujimi waterlines from the 70's. Some of the smaller details are a bit chunky (limits of the moulding technology of the day) but easy to replace with resin or etch. Only one I think I'm missing is the Exeter.
Had to resort to evilbay, but I've just won a very nice kit I've been after for a very long time. Can't wait to get it and seriously thinking of entering it into the campaign along with an armour kit. Maybe even one of those 1/32 tanks.

The book really opened my eyes as I read it in preparation for the review of it I did.

Hmmm, am I to interpret this as an offer of employment? If so we should perhaps discuss the currency of renumeration and most important an official title or rank?
How about Sub or Adjutant "Fearless Leader"?
