I've jus' made a start on my Sd.Kfz.222, it's my entry for the Wheeled Warriors GB! This is the re-issued kit by Tamiya featurin' a PE anti-grenade screen for the turret and a turned aluminium barrel. I've also ordered a set of PE for it, from Eduard, and a stowage set from Royal Model, so i'm hopin' that this is gonna' look the mutt's nuts when i'm finished with it!

At the moment i'm currently residin' in ejector pin mark city, as you can see!!

Hey Paul
Is that the re-issued Tamiya kit?
that's a lot of ejector pin marks!
Sounds like you've got it well planned out. Looking forward to seeing updates on your post.

Hi Paul,

Great start. I also built a 222 while back using Eduard PE set. This little bugger is got alot of details when it comes to PE. Are you building this one open hatched? I also cleaned up the ejector pin marks too but unfortunately none can see the effort

David, this is the re-issed version!

Benjamin, i'm not too sure whether I want the hatches opened, yet! I'm guessin' at the moment, i'll keep 'em shut!

The grappling hook looks wicked! The first photo looks great! I wish I have found this pic when I was modeling mine.

I've jus' received the Eduard phto-etch set from Hannants. The green light is on now, with this!

Jus' look at the dial fascia, in the third fret! They even include a filmprint of the dials, to lay behind it, which I forgot to take a pic of! Goddamnit, nevermind!

I've applied some PE to the interior already, I doubt very much it'll be seen, but at least i'll know it's there! This is all there is for the interior, understandably!

On some parts i've used Araldite epoxy superglue, it gives you more time to manipulate the parts into place. Not like normal superglue which is a one-shot deal, and too much pressure and frustration!

beautiful craftsmanship there. Sigh... too bad none can be seen when it's build.

I too use the same PE set and leave alot of the interior details out for that reason. Have you ever thought of doing it cut-away style? It would be a shame to hide all these nice details.

Thanks, Ben!

This is where i'm at, at the moment, with this! It all goes together pretty well, no issues with fitment, at all! Although, there are horrible mould seams on the parts, but it's nothin' a piece of 600 grit cannot get rid of!

I've applied the two headlamps, now these have a very crude fit, the right one especially so, and need a bit of attention, but nothin' too serious. After fittin' 'em, I then applied some Mr. Dissolved Putty!

Here i've made a box, the box front panel was scored from behind with a toothpick to create the 'X' ridge, this PE piece already had the templated mark, as a guide to doin' this! Eduard suggested usin' a ballpoint pen, but I found this was way too large, so I used the toothpick!

It was then folded into place and bonded with thin slivers of superglue, that's why you can see some sandin' marks, due to some slight spillage! BTW I made the penny, too!

Can see why they call you Fingers

If you're that good at forging I think you're wasting your time making pennies though!

I've added some more PE! I'm not sure what that box is used for, hangin' off the turret ring, but it is actually a single piece of PE, and carefully folded into place! Note the brackets and the lip runnin' round the top of the box!

It looks like an impossibility when you look at it on the fret, but it is possible! The thing is with the Eduard set, is that on some pieces it doesn't even give a diagram on how to fold them, and i'm left to work it out myself!

The road of PE is such a long one! It's been a smooth ride so far though, but i'm only 40% done!

Made some more progress, today! The pics speak for themselves, really!

Cheers, John!

I've prepared these parts, concernin' the PE. I cut away the moulded in guard at the base of the barrel pin on the gun chamber, this is important in order to fit and accommodate the Eduard piece, as you can see! These pieces are ready to go, now!

I'm addicted to PE, now!

I've ended up usin' Armorscale's barrel over the Tamiya version, no contest really! Tamiya's is correct, without the muzzle perforations, but is not as good lookin'!

It took a lot more work to make the Armorscale barrel fit, 'cos it's male fittin', as the instructions show!

I cut off the pin that was to support the Tamiya barrel, and with a 1.5mm drill bit, drilled out the end of the gun chamber. At this point, the hole in the end of the gun chamber could not be made any bigger for fear of rippin' it all apart with the Dremel.

The fit was still too tight, so I chose to file down the male fittin' pin on the barrel itself, to make it thinner, and grind the end down.

Here is the end result, straight and true!

This is the first thing on this kit that needed to be achieved first, when it comes to paintin'! I started by primerin' the surface with Vallejo's Metal/ Plastic White Primer. I then applied a pre-shade coat of XF-57 Buff, as a base for the white!

When I finish weatherin' the inside, the two halves of the body can finally be cemented together!

Hi Paul

Great work thus far I have enjoyed the pictures, progress and effort you have made posting your progress on line.

I would paint the inside of those hatches the outside colour presumably Panzer Grey.

I note your comments from the Armor forum and I quote:

"on the Rivet Review forum it looks like hardly anyone gives any feedback, unlike the Armor Forum! I wish i'd posted my progress here, now!"

I am personally sad to see your feelings about the lack of feedback in the Rivet Review Board. I personally have had the opposite experience.

Regards

Sean

Hi Paul t

The weathering is starting to come along.

Some chipping or scratches never go amiss inside plus a little bit of drybrushing using the white gives a nice focus someimes.

Keep us in the loop with progress.

Regards

We are looking really Eddie! I'm enjoying looking at your build, because I like German armoured cars too! In fact after the 8 wheelers, the 222 is one of my fave vehicles (I've made it twice over the years, but neither look as good as yours!). I take it from your reference pictures that you're planning on doing a DAK vehicle. BTW, I applaud you conscienciously filling in the ejector pin marks, but as I recall they are positioned so that none can be seen when the car is complete! Does the real vehicle have a pedestal mount as Tamiya depicted it? I recall reading somewhere the gun mounting was suspended from the turret, but this may have been referring to the similar mounting on the 234/1.

Thanks steve! You've made a point there! Personally i'm with you on the fact that the 20mm was suspended from the inside of the turret ring, there bein' an' arm that connects the armament to the turret. All this has been recognised and integrated into this kit by Tamiya! After all the components have been installed, the pedestal will never be seen!

Sean, I think some chips and scratches are in order, too! Cheers!
