Bronco will be releasing a Rheintochter anti-aircraft missile this September.
In 1942, the Allied air strikes against the German and industrial targets were increasingly fierce, which made the Germans step up their research and development of anti-aircraft rockets and missiles.

In September 18th of the same year, the RLM and the Rheinmetal Borsigl company officially signed a new type of anti-aircraft missile research and development contracts. The main person in charge was Dr. Crein, who developed the "Rhinebote" ground to ground tactical rocket as the project.

The new missile was called the ‘Rheintochter’, and it was also to become another attractive and unique work in the history of German missiles.
The first model of the "Rheintochter" anti-aircraft missile series was the R-1, being 5.7 meters long and weighting 1748 kg.
Its two stage structure was equipped with a several solid fuel rocket motors. In order to reduce the weight, the wings were made of wood.
Warhead was 150 kg of high explosive ammunition. The missile was controlled by a radio command and equipped with a 'Kugelblitz' radio remote controlled proximity fuse.

The missile launcher consisted of Flak41 type 88 mm anti-aircraft gun refit.

There were 82 test shots during August 1943, in which the projectile reached only 6098 meters (20 thousand feet) high, well below the expected 30 thousand feet. So the improved R-2 followed soon. It increased the tail in the R-1 on the basis of a larger surface, and some connected between the tail rudder.

The R-2 project was eventually cancelled in December, 1944 to be replaced by the R-III, but none of them ever entered service.

This kit from Bronco will use the excellent base from the Flak41 model, adding the missile and launcher. There are options for three types of tail and two heads.

Seems odd they chose to produce this development missile and not the R111 which, with it's strap on boosters to me seems more interesting.

Probably because, as the NASM writes "The R I was to be supplanted by the R III, a liquid-fuel missile with two side-mounted solid-fuel boosters that enabled it reach a higher altitude. However, only six R IIIs were ever launched, as opposed to 82 R I missiles." Hopefully the kit will allow making a R I as the R II appears to be an abortive design. KL

One of the photos shows it mounted on the Sonderfahrgestell chasis. That would be an interesting build. Don M.

Interesting to see, that Bronco has interpreted the layout of the two plates mounted on the rear wings to miss the lower left corners. In fact this is only an illusion created by the photograph because an object is at that point in front of the plate. However, this could be easily fixed, but I am still wondering, why they did not realize that. Overall, nice kit of a rare weapon. Gert

I don't agree Gert. It looks like the lower corner is clipped as you can see the shadow continuing across on the hillside behind. You can also see the clipped fins at 0:15 in this film. (It helps if you change settings to a 0.25 speed.) I think this is the same missile shown in the photo above. Some inflight stills show unclipped fins but that could be a change made over time. It seems logical to provide clearance at the lowest part of the missile when elevated. KL
