Trumpeter responds with its version of this WWII-era paper panzer. Here we see what the kit has to offer.
In early 1943, Krupp proposed to mount a 30.5cm L/16 mortar in an enclosed superstructure, and that by May of the same year, resulted in a conceptual design known as the Bär (Bear). The gun would have an elevation arc of 0 to 70 degrees and a limited traverse of 2 degrees right or left. It should be capable of firing two types of shells: high-explosive and concrete-piercing munitions. The vehicle would be well protected by having 130mm armor on its upper hull, 80mm on its sides, and 50mm on top. The vehicle however did not progress beyond the design stage as a competing design being worked on by Alkett was chosen and eventually produced as the Sturmmörser on the Tiger I chassis.
Trumpeter’s Grille 30-30.5cm (Grw) L/16 Morser ‘BAR’ (09535) is offered as a 1/35 scale kit containing more than 300 parts in plastic, copper, and photo-etched components. A decal sheet and one-piece rubber band tracks complete the offering. The kit builds a model that is 244.8mm in length and 105.4mm in width.
