With the continuing flow of 1/48 scale armour on to the market here we take a look at a company who produce the figures to complement them.
Dartmoor Military Models was started in 1988, producing a 1:35 scale range of military vehicles and figures. They also did contract white metal casting and pattern making.
In 1995 John became sensitized to the resin 1995 and had to sell the range and concentrate on contract casting and pattern making.
In 1997, At the suggestion of Pete Morton (Jakrei Miniatures) who at that time was designing figures for DMM and others, John decided to start a line of 1:48 scale white metal figures. This was a good move for the business as John could see a future for the scale, plus he could bolt it onto the contract casting.
The range continued to grow until 2000 when John’s wife Carolyn became ill, dying in 2002. With the pressures of bringing up a young family and keeping the contract casting business going John kept the figures on the market but did not release any new items.
John’s “occupational therapy” since then has been work with Pete Morton on new figures (1:48 & 1:32). This year John decided to re launch the business and release all previous figures plus the new figures he and Pete had designed.
The following are a sample of the range:
1:48th scale millitary figures
48M.001 WWII Four German tank crew figures (2 full + 2 half)
48M.002 WWII German tank ace and two crew
48M.003 WWII Two German self propelled gun crew
48M.004 WWII Two Russian tank crew
48M.005 WWII Two British tank crew figures wearing winter coveralls
48M.006 WWII German Feldgendarme and British military policeman
48M.007 WWII Two British SAS (LRDG) figures, Western desert (R)
48M.008 WWII Two British paratroop figures
48M.009 WWII Two British tank crew, Western desert
48M.010 WWII US tankers working around a tank (3 full figures)
1:32nd scale aviation figures
32A.001 WWII RAF pilot in flying uniform
32A.002 WWII RAF flight commander holding a clipboard
32A.004 WWII Luftwaffe groundcrewman in working overalls
32A.006 WWII USAAF armourer with a belt of ammunition
1:48th scale aviation figures
48A.001 WWII Three luftwaffe pilots inspecting aircraft
48A.002 WWII RAF groundcrew assembling rockets
48A.003 WWII Womens RAF officer and RAF pilot
48A.004 WWII RAF grouncrewman talking to pilot in aircraft (R)
48A.005 WWII RAF grouncrewman assisting a pilot into an aircraft (R)
48A.006 WWII RAF grouncrewman assisting a wounded pilot (R)
Primarily John sees the figures as diorama accessories for armor and aircraft models. Although as the scale becomes more popular and accepted he can see scope for more vignettes etc.
For the foreseeable future Dartmoor Military Models plan to release new figures most months.
John is in the process of setting up a company website but the distributors for DMM are:
Track 48
Friendship models
Quarter Kit
Parabellum
Red Lancers
Steel models
Relish models
