Staghound Mk. III

Painting

Before I began painting, the model was sprayed with isopropyl alcohol to remove any debris and oils from the manufacturing process, the build and general handling. After the IPA dried I applied Tamiya Red Brown acrylics, which serves as a primer and pre-shading. In some areas I also used Flat White paint to make some pre-highlighting, but as you will see in the further images that didn’t work well due to the dark base color.

For the base color I took Mr. Hobby H52 Olive Drab which is equivalent to British Olive Drab. For the highlights I added Tamiya Sand Yellow and Mr. Hobby Flat white. Even more white paint was added for further highlights, mainly on the turret roof and the engine access doors. After I was satisfied with the base color I sprayed the model with Tamiya X22 clear.

Bronco provides 2 marking variants – New Zealand and Canada and since there is no evidence of Mk.III usage by New Zealand I used the Canadian markings. The quality of the decals is very good and, to assist them setting properly, GSI Creos Mr. decal setter was used. The white stars were sprayed with white acrylics using PE stencils from Voyager model.

For the small details, such as the MG barrel and OVM tools, I used Tamiya Gun Metal and Vallejo Acrylics Oily Steel and Dark Flesh. The rust on the exhaust covers was also painted with Vallejo Old Rust and Yellowish Rust. After that I applied a Dark wash from MIG productions. On the bottom of the hull and the wheels I used Vallejo Dark Earth texture paste for the mud texture and Vallejo pigments for different tones.
