This fantastic diorama by Frank Jansoone features a specific 88mm gun called C for Cäsar and the battery commander enjoying a peaceful summers day in 1944. The model used is Dragon Models 88mm Flak 37 mit Behelfslafette kit 6523 and the officer standing by the gun is Alpine Miniatures.
Here is what Frank told us;
Last year a good friend of mine asked me if I could build him a Flak because he’s interested in World War 2 and the renowned German dual purpose gun. I’m more into building tanks but I decided to give it a try anyway and I must say that I enjoyed every minute of it. The Dragon 6523 kit is really top notch and a pleasure to build, and I’m sure I will be building some more guns in the future.
After looking into the subject I came across a story of the last gun standing (C for Cäsar) in front of the Ardennes Abbey near Caen Normandy in July 1944. This battery of the 12 ss Flak Abt was almost wiped out, only Cäsar, handled by the battery commander made a last stand, firing at point blank range at the British tanks and infantry until being overrun, leaving the crew dead by their gun. So I tried to depict „Cäsar” in better days, sitting comfortably in its gun pit enjoying the summer breeze.

@ Al & SdAufKla: Thank you for the kind words, gentlemen. Much appreciated.
@ JPTRR: Thank you for the compliment! I took the pictures indoors with a overhead light and a fill in light to soften the shadows. The background is just a print out from a picture I found on the internet.

Absolutely beautiful, this is my favorite subject in all of modeling. I currently have 2 37's and one flak 36, one of which I'm working into a 1943 winter dio. I try to read up as much as I can on the gun but can't seem to find stories and historic scenarios such as the amazing one described in this post. Any ideas on where I could search for 88 gun emplacements pics and unit histories? Fantastic build sir, I have plans to place one of my Flak 37s in the Bocage and would love to find stories and photos to guide me. Cheers!

I visited the blog and was very impressed. It was like visiting a workbench of exactly what I want to work on. Questions: what did you use for your tall grass in this diorama? It's excellent. Also, the Caen Caldron diorama looks incredible. I love reading up on the 12th SS. What figures did you use for Otto Funk, Klaus Schuh and Willy Boigk? ( The 3 panzergrenadiers)

@ Frank: I agree about the nice composition of this piece. The emplacement gives it a dimension that's difficult to produce in artillery dioramas. This is a fantastic piece!

The actual "Cäsar" story I found on the is forum:

I'm sorry the actual story is in German but it's a little long to translate. One of the advantages of being Belgian is that we have to learn how to speak Flemish, French and German !
To get (German) veteran accounts I think you're most likely to find them on those kind of forums.
I got my inspiration for the gun emplacement reading the book :
"German Field Fortifications" (I've send you a PM.)
Suggested reading about the 12 ss:
"The 12th SS" vol 1 & 2 by Hubert Meyer -- Stackpole Books
"Grenadiers" by Kurt Meyer -- Stackpole Books
If you're interested in how it was to fight the 12 SS in Normandy as a Canadian check out:
"Conduct Unbecoming" by Howard Margolian
I'm thrilled that you like my blog and I should really finish the "Caen Cauldron" diorama because it's gathering dust on the shelf !
The three Panzergrenadiers are S&T Miniatures, a little hard to find, maybe try here:

The tall grass is from the Heki Decovlies range
Thanks again for your kind words,
