Academy Tiger I Early

Paints and Decals
After assembly, the turret, upper and lower hull structures were pre-shaded with Tamiya Flat Black (XF1). Once dry, the tank received an overall coat of dark yellow (XF60). I applied camouflage using a mixture of black green, flat green and flat white (70% XF60 + 20% XF5 + 10% XF2). The paint mixture I used the camouflage stripes a subtle and faded look.

After finishing the turret and hull I proceeded to paint the road wheels using Tamiya dark yellow (XF60). The rubber part of the road wheels where painted or colored using I made use of a black marker pen to color the rubber part of the road wheels. After the ink dried, I washed the rubber parts with Tamiya flat black in order to kill the gloss finish.

I wanted to model my Tiger-I after the S.Pz.Abt. 502, but the decals that came with the kit did not support my requirements so I opted to just paint them. The balkencruz was air brushed against the hull by using masking tapes as stencils. The turret and hull numbers were initially hand drawn using a black marker pen. After the marker ink dried, I applied Tamiya flat black acrylic over the numbers to kill the gloss finish. The black outline of a “Mammoth” on the hull front, beside the ball machine gun was first hand drawn using a pencil and them painted over with flat black acrylic paint.

The tracks were hand painted using a mixture of flat black, flat blue and red brown (50% XF1 + 20% XF8 + 30% XF64). The mixture gave the tracks a blue steel finish rather the black color that we often see.

Once everything was completely dry (24 hours), I sealed the paint job with clear flat finish using Krylon Matt Finish to seal the paint.
