Triage at Aachen - 1945

"Triage" is a diorama based on a photo from a book I was saw called “A Photographic View from the Other Side”. This was a propaganda photo showing a scene in Aachen, the first German territorial city to fall to the allies in early 1945.

This photo details a rear-guard urban scene within the city limits during the fighting. A shattered home has been converted into a triage station, manned by several nurses and a few aides. Various branches of the German services are detailed, including panzergrenediers, werhmact, luftwaffen ground forces, and even a command HQ courier.

The buildings incorporated where highly detailed renditions from a commercial Custom Dioramics kit. Both “buildings” were extended in perspective to show multiple rooms using styrofoam, wood, and plaster.

The view depicted here is an aerial perspective showing a shattered bedroom, just above the former den of a private household. As an iron rail bed balances precariously above the floor below, a large beam has been wedged in place to prop of the remaining rafter.

Sharing "tips" is what this is all about, right? The rugs work best if you "back" them with some cheese cloth, gause, or very fine/thin felt. it gives them more depth and adds to the texture. Just go easy on the weathering, as it can eat right through the ink on the printed paper. As for the bricks, do a search on this site for "Digital Diamonds" and you will see how I cast my own bricks by the hundreds! - Keith

Keith (all), Please note you can access the Digital Diamonds very easily (in English) if you just click the "Features/Sections" main link on the left. It's listed there under Special Sections. Cheers, Jim
