Warsaw Ghetto Tram

  • move
Following Todd Michalak's recent tram diorama, I thought it might be interesting to show a different take on the same subject, in fact, the same kit (MiniArt European Tram 38001).

We have the menacing authority figure of the German Officer (from a separate MiniArt set), with yet additional figures from other MiniArt civilian sets. The overheads have been detailed up a little, and the Star of David emblems and the 'For Jews Only' signs replicated in German and Polish from period photographs.

The Ghetto trams were at first segregated between seating for ‘Aryans’ and for Jews, then ‘Jews only’ trams were introduced, with signs indicating the distinction. Gradually, trams were ‘colour coded’ in various formats and the authorities eventually expunged tram route numbers altogether from the usual external signs, leaving only a stark Star of David sign on display.

As such, there’s a poignancy, where these Jews had the belief that although they were under threat, at least they had reached a place of ‘safety’ together. The history of the Ghetto trams reflects that of the Jews, where the condition and labelling of a simple form of public transport reflected the political reality of a people facing extinction.

By the way Rob, I particularly like the work you did on the bottom part of the tram - those photos on page 1 of this feature of the dark, very matt, dusty, slightly rusty chassis really look the part.

Outstanding reminder of the true purpose and meaning of the murderous 3rd Reich.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I noted that after taking the photos, I'd neglected to add the Star of David armbands for the adults and the S/D badge for the girl, which I've now done (hand painted).

Great subject, only one thing you must change - "ul. ŻelaZana" not "ul. ŻelaSna" on the fort of tram

Thanks. The details were taken from an archive photo of the time. Not a Polish speaker myself, so wonder if original might have been done by German authorities.

You can really make a huge variety of scenes with this kit

Outstanding and a stark reminder of what was to come

Super diorama of a somber situation.

Hi Rob, I really like it when such a moving story is presented in diorama form. Nice work on this one! Also, nice work on the tower wiring. MiniArt doesn’t make that part very clear. What did you use as a reference … or are you an electrician? —mike

Hi Mike, Surprisingly there are several tram overhead references on line. I used these and a little added detail with PE from spares etc to add interest. I found out later you can in fact buy insulators in scale, but mine look OK I guess. I added a supporting rod at a diagonal from the top of the post to the horizontal section, in brass, as the overhead line tended to pull the sections out of shape, I think because of the 'play' in the thin plastic sections.
