The Minenwerfer ("mine launcher") was a class of short range mortars used extensively during the First World War by the German Army. These weapons were intended to be used by engineers to clear obstacles such as bunkers and barbed wire that could not be targeted accurately by long range artillery.

Thank you for the photos Hans, they are excellent. Somewhat unrelated question though: what -if anything- can you tell me about the large caliber shell in the background. I fully realize that it has nothing to do with the mortar; its just its proximity made me curious.

Hi Frank,
sorry to tell, but there was no information about the shell in the background. A guess that it might be 15cm smoke round.
