Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone can help with modern AFV's and soft skins in this scale?

Both Academy and Zhengdefu do some 1/48th modern AFVs in plastic, but their stuff is pretty toylike. Tamiya did some motorised 1/48th models back in the 70s too.

If you want plastic then ZhengdefuKitech and Academy are pretty much the only game in town. Both suffer badly from being motorised, all of the Zhengdefu tracked vehicles use the same chassis and so scale is a bit variable and their wheeled kits again use a common chassis whether BTR or LAV-25.
If you can get past this, say if you are a wargamer, then the kits aren’t that bad. The Zhengdefu ones are better than the Academy ones which have softer detail. For 28mm SF wargaming some very interesting conversions have been made by the South London Warlords for a big Hamme''s Slammers game at Salute and can be seen on their webpage with some useful articles on their construction.
I forgot Airfix. They used to do an Airfix Junior range which included a couple of armoured cars, a 6 × 6 and a 4 × 4 but both had a common hull and differed only in the turret and the number of wheels. These are unbelievably simple snap together kits made from a horrible plastic but once again are quite handy for wargaming. They seem to originate with Heller as they have a couple of figures on the sprues with FAMAS rifles and resemble some French armoured cars.
I keep mentioning wargaming, I am not attacking the hobby, after all I am one, but the needs for a kit are not the same as a pure model maker. Ease of assembly and durability are rather more important than scale fidelity, after all you need a dozen 'good enough' AFVs rather than one perfect one.
