I am looking for a good book on WWII German uniforms. I basiclaly am looking for color (if possible) and the differnt types of uniforms and what time period they were used in. Any suggestions? What brought this up is a have a DML Stalingrad Inforno set that I want to use the figures in wester front setting winter of 44. Are the uniforms correct? I have other question like this on differnt sets is there some source that can answer.

IMHO there should be a category just for German uniforms! Ihave always found getting the exact color for German uniforms a real pain!

I don't think you need a book, just get onto google images and type in something like "WWII German Uniform". You will get plenty of images and links to all kinds of military collector and re-enactor sites. That's where I go.

I have found through experience there was really no one shade of uniform. Even the same batch of uniforms could have varying coloring from the first tunic off the line to the last tunic off the line. Plus, there is uneven weathering and lots of mixing and improvisation. I really think it would be more realistic for each soldier in your dio to have a slightly different shade of color.

There's lots of info right here on Historicus Forma too. Why don't you check out the Axis Resource Centre ?

Right, let's assume the biggest problem is NOT the 'bog-standard' German Field-Grey uniform, but rather the variables with camo?

Here are some books I find invaluable:

Of these, the best 'primer' is the Calvin Tan book - it gives great mixes for various camo schemes...

The uniform was simplified in 1943, losing the jacket pocket pleats and the bottle green colored collars and epaulettes, all parts of the uniform being field gray afterward. Earlier uniforms could be seen in 1944, of course, as uniforms were worn until they were no longer serviceable, but they would be the exception in Normandy. Likewise, the tall jackboots were being replaced with cheaper ankle boots and canvas gaiters. In 1944, some troops received a cheaper uniform jacket cut somewhat like British battle dress, with a single breasted waist length jacket without jacket skirts. Late war uniforms were made of shoddy rayon wool blends, and were less green than earlier all-wool uniforms.

One book i would sugest is "German Soldier of World War Two" by Jean de Lagarde. Its a bit pricey buy definatly worth it, it has pictures of reenacters in actual german uniforms so the pictures are very good.

hope i was some help.
