DML have just sent us the poster for their latest release on the 38(t) chassis - DRA6469 - Sd.Kfz 140 Flakpanzer 38(t) ''Gepard'' Ausf. L (Smart Kit). The image-report can be seen:

Nice one! Definitely ought to be an improvement over the Alan offering and the interesting part of course will be whether it comes out before the Tristar offering or not.

I hope that the Kit is better than the art work, Dragon cranks stuff out and does not even care about the art work, hell I have purchased model kits purely based on the art work.

I don’t care who makes the kit, DML or Tristar.. Tristar might be better.. But I am going to get DML’s.. I am going replase the 20mm with the 30mm..

Hmmm. Interesting version! Is this another 'Paper Panzer"? .I've never seen this before, now if they make a flak variant similar to the Marder III (pak 36R on the 38 t) I'll get one!

Yea the artwork leaves a little to be desired. Its not the usual Volstad artwork that many have come to love. But i think this will be a little gem to build! can't wait!

Yes it was actualy produced in some numbers (it's on Wiki, I forgot the actual vehicles made).

Yes these were actually produced and saw combat. It was quite vulnerable being so "thin skinned" which made it necessary for the Ostwind/Wirbelwind to be produced. I know these were used in Normandy I believe mostly by the 12th SS Hitlerjugend.

No this is not a paper panzer. Yes, they were made. Saw a lot of action in Normandy (check out Zaloga's US tank Battles in France for a few shots of knocked out ones, not to mention the old Squadron "in action" book on the 38t).

Given the issues that the DML 38t G and Marder III H have, and how good the Tristar ones are, I cannot fathom why ANYONE would get the DML one over the Tristar one. Especially since both now have MSRPs that are nearly identical at around $42 US.

Availability perhaps? I seldom get to see a Tristar kit, but Dragon is all over the place. This is far more welcome to me than any number of "paper panzers". As mentioned above it did see a good deal of action in Normandy, I think the number made goes into the hundreds, but it wasn't really successful, as by 1944 a single 20mm didn't really cut the mustard. The later PzIV based vehicles could put far more lead in the sky, Gepards had to be used in large concentrations to have any real effect. Incidentally, it was obsolete when built, as the Germans had already decided that the 20mm wasn't really effective enough as a calibre, & were inclined to standardise on the 37mm weapon, but could never get enough.

This flak panzer did see combat use from January 1944. Some show up in Normandy. These were based on the modified 38t chassis ausf M. With luck it will be a nice one.
