Quoted TextPripyat' and surrounding areas are indeed safe, thanks to 47 pilots firefighters and Professor Legasov's sacrifise, but I would stay away from vehicle grave yards and Chernobyl-2 long range detection site. Anyone tried the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game? It's practically trip to the location, just make sure you leave light on.....![]()

I am going to have to disagree with that statement my friend. While visiting Pripyat, I had a device for measuring radioactive activity in the area (forget the name of it) but even in Pripyat, I was not able to visit the area around the ferris wheel / bumper cars because of high radiation. The average reading in Pripyat was still 40 times the normal level of radiation. Around Chernobyl the level was 77. I was not allowed around the area known as the "red forest" as radiation was 146 times the regular level (the trees that were there before had absorbed alot of radiation through their roots) I could see some of the vehicle graveyards but once again was not allowed near them due to high radiation. I have to find my photos as they are quite something. While in Pripyat I saw a lot of cool things. I visited an old school which still had math textbooks on and in the desks. An old hospital maternity ward which still had baby cribs and what looked like incubators. A room which was full of artwork and the like depicting former soviet presidents. Rooms in apartment buildings which were still fully furnished with couches, beds, kitchens, pianos, paintings and everything. It's pretty scary when you think that 50,000 people were evacuated within 48 hours. So if you ever do you go there, it truly is life changing, because everything, and I mean everything (aside from things that were looted) is still there.
If any of you are into gaming, I have been playing Call of Duty 4 and from the discription of this area it sounds just like a mission in the game. You are a member of a sniper team running through this abandonded neighborhood/apartment complex with funiture and artwork still in the rooms. As you go through the mission your comerad says something like "50,000 people used to live here." And at the end of the mission you are picked up by choppers near a ferris wheel and bumper cars. I'm intregued to see what the real Chernobyl looks like now.

50,000 was the population of the city at the time of its evacuation. What was depicted in CoD4 is pretty much what was there. The only parts I didn't get to see were the area around the ferris wheel so I cannot say I know what that is like.

Yes CoD4 has a level in Pripiyat. Even says it in the intro movie.
I think it's good that Chernie is being included in games so much lately. There are waay too many people that don't know that something like this ever even happened. And it makes a real cool setting for a game. Very original

I regret buying CoD4, everything is scripted, no ballistics at all and scenario, well, it's just moronic. And frankly I think it's ridiculous for a player to realize that it takes 7 to 10 marines to clear small deli shop unless human player is playing as a babysitter. One thing that makes it stand out, nonetheless, is graphics, especially during night USMC advance into Cairo, other then that- plain arcade. America's Army and Project Reality are the only games realistically modeling small modern combat. Stalker on the other hand has thorough ballistics and in game physics engine supported by suspenseful sound and video effects provided by crew working on actual locations. Besides now with the new add on with full DX10 support its graphics will outperform CoD4 easily.

Since when do video games have to be realistic? Thats why it's a video game, because its not realistic. I like the fact that if I die, I magically respawn to do it all over again. And to me it's fun as hell to use 7-10 of your teammates to clear out a cafe. If I wanted realistic I'd join the army.

I have to agree with FOX HOUND. COD4 is, in my eyes, one of the best games ever, when it´s about fun and joy. Single-Player is okay, but Multiplayer is just bad-ass! I love the fact that it´s NON WW2.
If you ever meet "ShootinPutin"..........think of me

Maybe we should go to the other section of forum and discuss it there. Some like graphics oriented games and others don't it's perfectly fine. But one gets most from modern shooter from its multilayer option where CoD team has intentionally added two cheats and called them as 'features." Coupled with scripted weapons, this just does not come close in terms of intensity and satisfaction as does Project Reality mod for some 4 year old Battlefield 2 with it's inferior visuals. I've played all installments of CoD and I really liked original one, but the 2nd and 4th already didn't have that something and survived only 2 weeks on the hard drive.

As much as I agree with you about the whole taking a year to clear a store thing, CoD4 never was designed as a simulation. You wouldn't want your teammates to go running ahead of you and doing all your fighting for you just because you decided to take in the scenery. It's designed to give you action and I think it does that very nicely.

Talking about finding history......I was talking to a guy at my LHS and he was in Hurtgen forest walking around and found a chunk of rust which later turned out to be a base of a shell fired from a Jagdtiger!..I cant remember the details but he said there were about 4 or so Jagdtigers in that particular conflict.I know this is not soviet ,but I just thought it was cool..and wanted to share
