I just got the kit today and looked at the back there are 5 figures in it.
all are in pea dot camo but the 4th figure Number D it looks like he has a leather coat on but has Luftwuffe pants ???

I am just wandering if this is just the illustrators mistake or did the tiger crews use luftwaffe clothing any info guys ?

Hey David,
Figure D represents top Tiger Ace Michael Wittmann and he's wearing a leather coat and pants, originally designed for U-Boat crews, that was used by SS tank crews.
He is not wearing Luftwaffe pants.
I believe the artwork was done by Ron Volstad and I think the shine of the black leather pants was depicted as a dark blue grey.
It's unlikely that SS troops wore any Luftwaffe items but considering all the shortages in 1944-45 Germany, it's possible.
Cheers

Hi David,

Yes, it was a mistake of sorts. When that illustration was done, the current info was that he was wearing blue mechanics overalls beneath his leather jacket. This was based on an eye-witness report made by a German war correspondant,

Subsequently, it became clear that he was in fact wearing a two piece Waffen-SS flak crewman's protective uniform made from black Herringbone Twill fabric. This was based on the research of the late Michael D. Beaver in his 3 volume study of SS uniforms and a new photgraph that clearly shows Wittman wearing such an item.

FWIW,
Ron Volstad

Interesting. I didn't know that there was a two piece version of this clothing. Luftwaffe Flak crews were issued with a one piece black overall, this was also worn by the Waffen SS crews, & indeed by any troops who crewed Flak guns (there is a photo in Furbringer of members of 9th SS Butchery company being awarded decorations, they are wearing this clothing).
