Great build James..am slowly working on my own Maus and will be very happy if it comes even close to your effort. A question on the wheels though....... should the wheels have holes all the way through or just indentations. I notice you don't appear to have drilled them through and yet it would make sense that they are open completely? I notice on the Accurate Armour rendition of V2 the holes look like they go through the wheel.

Nice photos! I never realized they existed on this rare vehicle. I'll be watching this build very closely because I've always like this one and it looks good so far.

That is entirely correct. The photo's show the 1:1 scale wooden mockup used for testing the various placements and designs for the deflector.

I'll send you the full scans ASAP.

Got them, and thanks again Herbert!

Thanks Andy! I appreciate it.

The holes you mention are just indentations, in photos I have they clearly do not go through the entire wheel. I can post a pic if you would like some confirmation.
I presume given the imense weight of the Maus, complete holes would be deemed as too weak to support it and therefore the indentations a half-way measure for weight saving against strength.

Hope that helps, good luck with your build!

Hi James, thanks for the info....don't worry about posting the pic, I figure you have your hands full as it is!
Pity about the holes as I intended to drill my DML wheels through (had a template all ready)! and figured it would be easier than trying to drill part way through all to the same depth.....gues I will just have to spend out on a set of the Atilier wheels......damn this is getting expensive!!

James,

That is looking SOOOOOOO good! And, looking forward to your continued updates!

Mike

p.s. Go figure...got another MAUS headed my way! Heheheheh!

Me too! I saw the weighted test turret available so I want to build a V1 as well. I still see the kit quite regularly on eBay.

EDIT UPDATE: I got my 2nd Maus kit then scored an Accurate Armor Maus kit on eBay for $50.00 the next day. Looking forward to seeing how it looks when it arrives.

lol, yeah I considered drilling out the wheels myself, but for the same reason went for the aftermarket set. I'd say it could be done, but it would be some serious work.

Good luck with the purchases, hopefully the cost won't get too out of control!

That sounds good, would make for a different build in 1/35. A couple of different options for colour schemes for V1 too.

Be interested to see the build if you go for it.

In my infinite wisdom I put the charger for my camera up so I wouldn't have to hunt for it and I haven't been able to locate it again in a month of searching. Eventually it will have to appear; my house is onls so big...

James , good to see you are making progress on your build. Looking good. I recently came across another reference book for the Maus. Wheels and Tracks Magazine No. 23 1988, has an article by David Fletcher. Some of the pics are the same as a lot of the other Maus books have, but some are new to me. Some of the line drawings are great too. There is a pic of the driver's station different than the one you have posted here. There is also a new line drawing of the deep wading equipment. fitted for stream and river crossing. I don't think taking a 188 ton tank into any body of water would be a smart thing to do. In the text it states that when the factory was taken by the Allies, parts were found for at least nine Maus tanks. I have to wonder were all those parts ended up. Looking forward to your next progress report. Don M.

lol! We've all done something similar, did it with my passport once and had a real last minute panic trying to re-locate it!
Good luck with the hunt,

Thanks Dom,

Those pics sound interesting as they do sound different to ones I have seen.
I may have seen the line drawings for the deep wading equipment however. I agree though that I wouldn't want to drive a Maus into a river! However, the design was more due to the fact that there were little to no bridges capable of supporting the Maus, and so if it was to be of any use in combat it would need such an attachment. However, they did originally think this about the Tiger 1.
9 Maus tanks? This is a new figure to me, I know that another hull was built, and the turrets for that hull and V1, along with the mantlets. This fills the order for 3 that was made, however in my understanding that was all. Is it possible that some parts were actually for the turret destined for the uncompleted E-100 hull? I'd be interested in any more info on this.
As for what happened to them, i'd be 100% confident that they were melted down for scrap after the war along with so many other AFV's.

Have made some more progress and so will update you all soon.

James, just wondering if you completed your Maus? I finally got ahold of the of the Atelier Infinite perforated wheels and I will resume my Maus soon. Not sure if I will go to the extreme you are, but I am excited to get back at it and finally finish this stalled project. Thanks, Don M.

Yes! I'm wondering the same thing. I'm working on the Maus too, but didn't bother to look for the wheels. I did get the Eduard-set though. I just saw today that the bottom escape hatch is located totally wrong Don't know if I'll try to fix that, seems like quite a lot of hastle.
But yes, I'm curious too for a continuation of this build since you're doing a magnificant job!!!

Cheers,

John

BTW, how did you guys straighten the warped hull? I tried this so far, but it's still quite warped:

Thomas Jentz just released a new and fully revised book on the Maus and the E-100 in his Panzer Tracts series with updated drawings by Hilary Louis Doyle. It's available from the authors through their Panzer Tracts website.
The smooth road wheels were reinstalled after the internal mounting for the rubber rings was redesigned (the holes in the interim wheels were to keep the rings centered).

I don't know anything about the Maus, not being an armor guy, so I'm enjoying your build log on this beast.

I've got that book and have read it cover to cover. Lots of actual date by date history on the Maus along with the best line drawings, pics on the subject. It will certainly be one of the best reference books on the Maus and E-100 ever put out. Don M.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately this project has been put on the back burner again.

Too much on at the minute i'm afraid, including planning to emmigrate to australia at the end of the year. However, I will get it completed at some point, and when I do it will be posted up on here.

John, my upper hull was left with a book on it for some time to straighten it out, it still has a slight warp but that should easily be dealt with when joining it to the lower hull and side plates.

Gerald, Don, that book will without doubt be the king of reference for this build. Don't have a copy myself yet though. Interesting to get some closure on the road wheels. Seems my Maus isn't a 'final' version after all, never mind!

Thanks again guys, and I appologise for keeping you waiting yet again.

James, I know all about putting builds on hold for awhile. My Maus project has been ongoing for a couple years now. Maybe someday we both will finsh them up. Good luck with your future move, sounds like a large task. You can't go wrong with the new PanzerTracts Maus book, I'm very glad they put this book out for us modelers. Don M.

This is great! Will be using this as a reference to build my Maus. Can someone tell me the difference between an early V2 Maus and a late? Thanks!
