im sitting here quietly in my little corner building my panther G in between cups o tea and checking my posts on here a thought hit me - (not litteraly) how popular is the panther? - then i thought i'd ask opinions - what IS the most popular armour/tank? what tanks are most favourable to build?does anyone have an alltime favourite?

Mine has to be classic ww2 armour - particulary russian or german - classic, advanced (for that time) it was a real battle not only in the field, but in the planning rooms that led to some serious armour rolling around the countrysides and cities of europe and further - that led to perhaps some of the toughest engagements of the war.

what dyou think? let me know! hope its a good question

My favorite armor to build is the Tamiya T-34 both 76 and 85mm versions. The old Tamiya kit goes together pretty nice and quickly and, at least to my eyes, looks like a T-34. And now that Maquette has put out a set of plastic tracks which are priced like bananas I will be revamping all my already built T-34's with their tracks.

Personally speaking, the most popular AFV for me is the next one I'm about to buy, or the one I've just bought.

But I do like the Panther vehicles, esp. the new ones out by Dragon. Very, very nice. I sure do hope this company brings out the whole family of these things, as I would really like to have a complete collection of them. Of course I also like the Russian vehicles too, esp. this new T-55 Tamiya just came out with. I really like the newer models with all of their 'state-of-the-art moldings.

And Shermans are nice too. Would love to see Tamiya bring out a Sherman or two, or three or four in 1/35 scale using all of the new plastic molding technology they developed the last couple of years that show up so well on their Pershing and the T-55.

Of course I do like the older ones, esp. from Tamiya, as even through they aren't quite 'up to snuff', they are still okay by me. And with a few little add ons, will do just fine. Plus I do like those prices most of these have.

Take care and happy modeling. sgirty

I think this question has been asked a bunch here. Do a search and you will find some threads. Maybe they could have an opinion poll?

Do you mean WWII? Modern?

I'm sure you will find Tiger, Panther, Sherman, and Abrams somewhere near the top.

If you were able to poll all people, the Tiger would probably win.

Myself, I like modern US armor, in particular the M1 series tank although I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the M60. Any of you old DATs remember having to unlock the brakes when they stuck?

I would have to follow in on the lead taken by the majority of the rest.... German and Russian Armor. Although it was mostly german, the Russian stuff is getting more and more appetising all the time. I think if you asked me this same question in 2 months time, my answer could be different though. Its all cool to a certain extent.

I agree with Sabot - I think polling all levels of modelers, the Tiger would come out on top. Perhaps the Panther and T-34 would run together close as second and third. The Sherman and variants would round out the Top Four IMHO...

(Dang-if if I'm not really a fan of any of them - Walker BullDog's forever! )

The Patton series, from M-47 through the M-60A3... and all variants. I can build for years and never run out of ideas.

According to a "recent" armorama poll, its -

1. Tiger I
2. Sherman
3. Panther
4. "Other"...

Seems like the most popular tank around here is the Tiger.... Though I'd bet that there are not that many of us actually building one.

I personally think that the poll was pretty accurate... but then I'm a bit "biased".

Later,
Tim

wow...guess it was a good question to ask - it seems that ww2 german armour has it -
followed by the russians in a close second - im not sure about about more modern armour, i dont think it has the personality of the older type, - its like comparing a classic car to a modern ford, the classics have it. For me, i love the tigers, panthers, etc, and the russian t 34/85 - i did one years ago and loved it, unfortunately i dont have it anymore. I did a chieftain, and an abrams w/ mineplow, but no, the ww2 stuff gets the ratings. Once ive completed this panther dio ill do a tiger + dio - and see if i can start my collection off with a few faves'.

alpha the tiger - the volkswagen(peoples car) of tanks?? :-)

I have to go with Dragoon, anything from the Patton family, then anything from the M113 FOV.

In my opinion the Tiger tank is one of the most widely built pieces of armor that a person can look at. Everywhere you look people have built Tigers, An elderly man from Burma, a French schoolgirl, and American businessman, and My grandmother have all built Tigers.

I'd have to say that I also agree with Sabot. I prefer the M1 series as well. I have built at least 4 over the past 10 years. When you consider that I am lucky to finish 2 a year it is easily the highest percentage. Next is all other modern MBT's with an emphasis on Russian ones.

I have always concentrated on US armor of WWII. I have always liked the Sherman and have several.

Oh, yes I remember having the brakes lock up on the M60A3 on several occassions. My only experience driving was at AOB 16-83 (wow, 20 years ago) at Ft Knox and I managed to lock them many times. My tank was named "Superman" (after my uncle's Sherman in WWII) and I built Tamiya's M60A3 complete with my crew's tanker's roll on the grunt rails.

Has anybody built Academy's M48A5?

For me it's the M2A2 Bradley. Them again if I ever get out of this desk job I'll be on them again.

But for this site I'd say the panzer or the tiger

In my opinion the most popular are WW2 AFV. Just look at the image galleries here and in the others in the web. In WW2 vehicles, the German Armor.
My orther is
Tiger I
Panther
Panzer III - IV
But I´m a Shermanholic, and I love all the versions of the Sherman (most the M4A1 76W).

For me is the Leopard 1A1/1A2 (the later an italian modification of the German 1A1). I've spent my youth on it and I'm love with it...

I always have loved the Stug Series... I have built 5 of them now (finished the StuG 40 F a couple of weeks ago) So stugs are the way to go
Further all the German armor pieces will do just fine :-) :-)

For me, it's the Tiger got 2 versions of the ONE built and have been collecting info and extra goodies for both versions of the King As to the Panther, the last show I competed in half were Panthers in the category. I think a Stug 3 won and there was a Ferdinad and something else that took the prizes. I've only got 1 Sherman and honestly have no desire for another, its part of my US armor collection
