I have taken a look through the KV ref material I have and have found nothing to support side mounted fuel tanks being used. This doesn't mean it didn't occur though.

Diesel-engined KVs carried one or two fuel drums on their trackguards, the few petrol-engined ones carried up to five. The Germans don't seem to have bothered adding cupolas to their captured KV-1s, at least in the pictures I've seen.

Hey Ian,
Weren't all Soviet tanks, including the KV's, built with diesel engines?
I've never heard of a KV with a petrol engine, did the Germans rebuilt one with a spare Maybach engine?
Cheers

There was a temporary engine shortage in 1941 and a small number of KV's got the gasoline engine from the T-35.

If you look up Trumpeters KV tanks in use by Germany it will give you some ref for the needed changes, if I get time I will take some photos and post them up for you as regards the cupola.
