Ok, now that Steve has finished his rocket fast review and build (how the heck does he do it, and scratchbuilding too...?) I will start on my kit, in my much more plodding manner.

First, references of the basic kit:

Steve's review of the kit

Steve's BLOG for the MAZ-537

Perth's review and sprue shots

and to get you on your way with the real deal, two links to walk arounds on Prime Portal:

40 picture link of variants

120 picture link of MAZ-537 in Hungarian Service

So there is the basic setup, I will report on my in-box findings next.

Now, first off, my primary reference for the "correctness" aspects of the build is:

Tankograd Special No. 2 - "Soviet Tank-Transporter and Heavy-Duty Truck MAZ-535 adn MAZ-537" If you do not have this, Tankograd are reprinting it this year.

Now, let's get into what i like to call the "great wheel controversy". Essentially, people are criticizing Trumpeter's wheels, specifically the Tractor ones. And...(they asked imploringly...)

...yes, Trumpeter screwed them up. But not quite the way everyone has been discussing it.

I took measurments and compared them to the 1/35 scale drawings and diagrams in the Tankograd book. Trumpeter actually made the wheels relatively close...until you go past the sidewalls of the tire. They just flat out made the tire too flat...not too small. See below, Red markings are for kit profiles, Yellow are for correct profiles.

As can be seen, they need more "bulge" in the middle. The real tires have a very distinct rounded profile and Trumpeter squared this off. But the wheels have the correct diameter out to the edges of the sidewall, so they are technically correct as well. Sort of. Also, they messed up the tread pattern. It should "curve" on the "top" and it should be straight on the sidewalls...but this is reversed. Again, the lines tell the tale.

This also proves true for the trailer wheels, although the diameter of the wheels is not an issue here:

How big of an issue is this? Well, the sidewall and tread detail is not too noticable unless you really look into it...to be honest, I have a hard time caring. But the lack of "bulge" is a fairly obvious problem AND it is a noticable feature in EVERY photo I see of a 537. There is no variance that I notice. So we have to make due with what we have for now and hope for resin wheels with this corrected.

Interesting information Jacques!

I'm very curious to your build and I'm sure you'll produce something beautiful. Do have some special plans with the kit?

Heh.

Not yet. Things are holding up the process: Research. I am trying to find good photos of the interior roof of the cab. Noone seems to take pictures of it...

Also, my photo shoot area is being used for temporary storage, so I cannot take photos. Sigh.

But this is something I keep looking over bit by bit. So far it looks good. The cab detail is a bit sparse, but it will be easy to add the detail. Not sure how accurate the benches are, but some photos corroberate the "bench" style of them.

Oh, I found some more resources on the 'net:

MAZ-537 walkaround and variants. In Serbian or Czech?

MAZ-537 CAD drawings and Blue Prints

MAZ-537 walkaround and trailer...Finnish?

That should help.

Hi Jacques,

have you been able to find some extra interior cab photos? My MAZ did arrive today and I started dry fitting, the interior is indeed very basic but should not a real problem to improve it. We only need some decent pictures and my internet search didn't come up with usefull photos.

Thanks for the heads up Nick.

Here are a few links I just found concerning the upcoming massive Russian May Day parade:

This one has photos of the MAZ-537 still in service. Go about half way through, and there they are in the pretty cammo and all.

More shots of other equipment practicing the parade.

How times have changed? Oh, and disregard the Escort service ads...

Cyril,

Yes, according to the First Tankograd special on the 535 and 537 trucks, the DDR did have a few but used them sparingly as they were difficult to manuever in towns with narrow roadways. After the Reunification, they sold them off to private owners, who mostly turned them into pipe carriers (for laying oil/gas lines).

And that is all I know of the 537 in DDR service.

Ummmmmm........Not yet?

I had to put it on th eback burner as I am working hard to finish up research on the T-80 series, thankfully about done and much clearer now, and I am doing a lot more "solo Dad" stuff as my wife has been extra busy for the last 3 weeks. In fact she is gone until Friday and then it is off to the In-laws for a night. I might actually get some glue onto pieces then. I have done quite a bit of research on the cab in particular, so once I get going it should be at a fairly good pace. No worries!

I don't undertand everything but I hope this means you are bringing pictures soon.I have seen your other works and they are very impressionable.

I would like to build one in Egyptian service but I can't find any information or pictures, even here in Egypt. Anyone ever seen pics of an Egyptian one? I know the color will be sand, but I'm interested in what markings it might have on it.

Thanks
Hisham

Hisham - I am sorry, but I have not yet been able to find a photo of the MAZ-537 in service with the Egyptian Army. My best guess is that it would be in the same colors as the SAM-2 transport with the same style national markings.

As for me, here is some of what I have been up to (sorry this took so long...)

Assembly steps #1 - #3: I added handles to the doors, handles to the exterior cab, built the top hatch and attached it and added handles to the engine cover.

Looking over the pictures from the new Tankograd book, the interior detail is fairly nice, but the accuracy is fairly poor. The detail of the interior doors is incorrectly sized and placed. The interior face of the roof hatch has incorrect detailing. The cab interior has a good dash board, but is missing all of the floor detail. There is no representation of the interior "covers" (the upholstry, if you will) or the floor mats. The seats are represented as one long bench but should be two chairs on each end (adjustable?) with a bench in between. The back of the cab interior is missing the indentation for the manual fuel pump handle, as well as the handle itself. There also appears to be a indentation for where the handle for the overhead spotlight handle would go,but there is no handle.

However, the dash looks pretty good. Detail is good for someone who just wants a OOB with no open doors. It sounds bad, but only someone who is looking this kit over in a serious way is going to notice. I expect that Eduard will fix some of these problems IF they do a PE kit, we will see. I am not sure if I am going to worry much about it in this build...maybe some quick fixes, like heavy paper cutouts for the interior upholstry and floor mats and maybe some quick additional detail on the floor.

More upcoming.

Nice one Jacques!

Nice to see that we are on the same building stage. I have done some basic interior detailing like the floor and the seats. I will make some photos when I got home. Keep it up!

Interior detail is still very basic but I think the new seats make a real difference when is cab is closed.

Jurgej, nice work. I agree, fixing the seats is the one thing that can be done to improve the look just for those glancing into the cab. And Trumpeter is mystifying on this. The lower seat has divisions in it for the proper breakdown, but the back part of the seat does not. It makes me wonder what kind of Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde team they have working over there. (More likely the original "better" team got called off the project to do a new one and they had a "closer" team come in to get it ready for production at the cost of consistency...)

Anyhow, on to step 4: Make sure you properly clean up the pieces, especially D-11's faces, when doing this step. Taking a little extra time here will ensure a straight frame later. Also, make sure you properly "seat" the frame bottom plates (B1,33,34,35) as the gear cases also built in this step need to fit to them in Step 5.
