Hi all,
I am planning on painting some 1:35 SS figures in their white winter camouflage. My question is, how do you paint the highlights and shade on a white uniform? Should I use a little grey? From what I have heard these white uniforms where kept very clean so they would not become useless in the snow. Can someone please help me?
Cheers,
Matthijs

Hi Matthijs,
Jaume Ortiz has a very nice method in his "Modelling Fallschirmjager Figures" book - which I highly recommend (not only usful for German paras ). In the final chapter of the book he demonstrates 3 or 4 different methods, or mixes, of painting white.
Here's the first one, mixes in Vallejo:
Basecoat: Offwhite 820 + Buff 976 (50:50)
Shadows: Chocolate Brown 872
Highlights: Lighten BC progressively with only topmost HL's being Offwhite 820
He actually has many more mixes, including for whitish canvas in this book. As I said, it's highly recommended.

Kept clean?
The reversible suits were hard to wash and waiting around for them to dry in freezing conditions would have deterred all but the foolhardy. Lightweight covers on the other hand would have been much easier to keep clean.

and thank you David fot the pic, that was the last time I believe anything that is written in a book
I have figures with the reversible suits so I think i will add some dirt to them.
