Was the sd.kfz.7/1(sd.kfz.7 with quad 20mm mounted) ever used as a prime mover for the 88 while still in its AA configuration?

Reason for the question is that I have an 88 and a sd.kfz.7/1 that I think would look really good together, especially covered with mud and white distemper paint.

Hi

I can't see why one would not be used to pull an 88 but do bear in mind that although capable of pulling the 88 the vehicle would not have the space to carry the ammunition that one dedicated to the job has, or the crew capacity.

Whilst I'm sure not beyond their capabilities to be able to do both, a crew would be trained to operate one type of gun at a time. Setting up and firing the 88 is different to operating a quad gun

So whilst from a horsepower point of view I think it has the capability and if needed to in an emergency I'm sure it would have done so but from a crew carrying, both types of ammunition carrying and operating requirements situation I'd say it's unlikely.

Alan you are probably correct. Guess I'll just have to go with a sd.kfz.7 pulling an 88 with a sdkfz.7/1 in convoy with them.
thank you for the quick reply,

Like Alan said, anything was possible in an emergency. However SP flak guns were assigned (and highly VALUED) to protect mobile assets. Heavy flak gun units were higher level assets and while mobility was needed, not nearly as much as a SP Flak (SdkFz 7/1).

Certain units got issued specific equipment so the unit could fulfill its assignment. A heavy flak unit officer wouldn't choose a heavily laden SdKfz 7/1 for his already large burden of moving an 8.8cm Flak and crew and ammo.

Gotta consider military bureaucracy and aquisitions protocols.

Thanks Roy, I forgot about the protocol. I guess this old brain is just getting tired. By the way, good show!

Late in the war, from March to the end, I can certainly imagine this happening.

All kinds of oddities were dreamt up, 37mm Flak guns on Panther-D chassis, Flak 88 bolted onto a Pz II chassis cut down. So a 7/1 pulling an 88mm, sure, it is very well possible.

Hi,

I've seen a picture of a destroyed Sd.Kfz. 7/2 with 88mm gun in tow. An Sd.Kfz. 8 pulling 2 88mm guns. Also a Sd.Kfz. 7 pulling an 88mm that had a flakvierling in tow. So, I believe that when it came to moving the 88mm & other flak guns they used whatever they could.
