Some of Tamiya's earlier 1/48 kits (like the M4) were a bit too simplified for my taste (and for the price) but they've made some serious improvements and the KV-2 I'm about to embark on is a beauty (as much as a KV-2 can be). The Crusaders are also lovely pieces of work and I hope that Tamiya get around to a Matilda as the old Bandai one is a mess.

However their figures remain the same, but I'm going to try and make up set of tank riders from the Soviet set nonetheless. Either that or they get ICM do make a decent set of infantry.

In your review you state that the fit of the parts on Tamiya's M8 is good. Unfortunately, photos 10 and 13 show what appears to be some serious fit problems in the area of the driver's and assistant driver's hatches, as well as the front armored plate. In photos 11 and 12 there also appears to be a noticably large gap next to, or beneath, the arial mount. Can you comment on this?

While I can't comment on Jim's experience building the kit, I found that the driver/co-driver's hatches did have some fit issues. I needed to remove the protectoscopes and thin edges of the hatch covers to get a proper fit. As for the gap beneath the antenna mount, that too is a minor fit problem. Taking the front plate first - there is a gap of around 1/2mm. This was filled in a matter of seconds. As I explained in the review, I put a thin bead of Mig's Acrylic paste to fill it (which dries clear so it seems to still be there - it isn't.

The bottom of the hatches is the same - I haven't got round to addresing the small holes on that yet. The top hatches are only 'tacked' on so i'll be taking them of and taking a sliver of plastic off them so they fit inside. As I said (and stand by it) the fit IS generally good those issues which exist are, IMO, minimal...

An OK model can be built OOB, but the serious modeller will be appalled by the lack of detail in the turret and in the driver/co-driver's positions. Without AM assistance the hatches will have to be modeled closed. And the moulded-on stowage rack on the turret is AWFUL and definitely needs to be replaced. Tamiya could easily have made this a separate add-on part. Hauler makes a decent external PE detail set which really makes this model stand out.
