I am trying to get some information about a prototype Russian tank post WW II. Currently unable to locate a picture of it, but here is a discription:
T-55ish turret, but the running gear looks like the Ferdinand/Elefant, same double drive sprockets and everything. DId they develop a Ferdinand into a test chassis for testing turrets? or adapt the suspension into a pre T-55 vehicle?

Yes, that is the one. the picture I had seen was blurred distance shot and from the left rear. Details were very lacking and I thought it might have been a Russian Photoshop, were some one used the German Ferdinand picture stretched the chassis with one more road wheel and grafted on a IS-3 turret.

Was this a prototype or a low production run before the T-54 series started?

Unsuccessful prototype heavy tank, unrelated to the T-54/55 family.
