If someone did a 3D printed LVT1 track set I would seriously consider scratch building an LVT1.

You, sir, are miles ahead of me, both in modeling ability and knowledge of amtracs. These odd and wonderful vehicles have always been a background interest for me (I suspect that my knowledge is beyond most casual builders), but I know nuttin' when compared to you. I will try to do justice to a Guam 1st Armored Amphibian Battalion LVT(A)1 (using the old Italeri kit) as soon as I wrap up a few other in-progress things (I recently got a copy of their unit history, "Hitting the Beaches," at a price that I could make myself pay). The LVTP5 will have to wait for another day (but is on my to-do list).

Hey AmTrac1833

Sounds very interesting. Maybe its possible to work together for a future P5 book. Im searching also trough some archives and had the chance to get some detailed drawings from the P5 from one of the manufacturers (FMC). Will publish them in a future book and im very interested in any kind of picture material of the P5.

I am definitely up for that. That is very amazing you were able to get detailed drawing from the manufacturer. I managed to “liberate” the engineer drawings for the P7 RAM/RS upgrade – they had been placed into the recycle bin to make room for other paperwork. I attached links to couple of the albums I have on Photobucket with most of my P5 images. I know I have more stashed away that I need get scanned and loaded, just one of those lack of time things.
The picture is my at hand “Pubs Library” with most of my LVT/AAV pubs. I have binders of photos and slides stashed elsewhere.

I think I was(am) very lucky in that I spent my entire Marine Corps career on AmTracs. So I have 20-years of YAT YAS embedded in my DNA now. I did a tour with the Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch which offered incredible opportunity to operate and repair the AAV. At times we were operating in 8-hour shifts for 24 hours six days a week and I volunteered for double shifts. Later I was afforded opportunity to be assistant curator to the LVT Museum where I got to drive the LVT(A)5 Modified (the one from Flags of Our Fathers) on several occasions.
As far as models go, I’m good enough to satisfy myself and that’s all that counts on my shelf. The big challenge I have created for myself is scratch building an LVTP6. No kits exist and material/information is stored on Unicorn saddles. However I think I have the parts and sources for parts – all except for the goofy tracks of course, to get one on my shelf nestled between an LVTP5 and AAVP7A1.

I remember one trip from Kin Blue to Kin Red (Okinawa) in an elevated sea state, and that's enough for me. We were passing helmets up through the T/C hatch to be dumped and dipped in the South China Sea for what seemed like an eternity. Heck, even the crew chief at the back hatch blew chunks (once the first guy lost it, things quickly went downhill). Ahh, the sweet memories...

Thats a cool library you got there. You wouldnt by any chance have anything on the P900 AAK. I was thinking of doing a track with that armor. All I could find was a couple pictures on the net.

I had a similar experience near the same location! It was the only time up-chucked in the back of a hog. We were leaving CTA and splashed at Kushi Crossing at night, there were no grunts embarked. It was a platoon op to the MOUT facility they had there. I used my helmet as the LRB (Lunch Review Bag) and although I washed it out the head band still grew green fuzzies by the next time in needed it.
The worst I’ve experienced/witnesses was Somalia. We left the beaches and headed toward a (one of two that decided to cross paths somewhere along the way resulting in the first couple tractors landing on the wrong boat) blacked out ship running as if the Somali navy was after it. After couple tractors went down ashore we had to spread load the grunts across the rest of the platoon. So all the AAVs were packed! And in case anyone was wondering Somalia is freak’n Africa hot!!! As you said earlier, once one person spews, all the taps are open. We got aboard ship, opened the cargo hatches and ramp hatch and that awful aroma of diesel exhaust, week without shower and puke came flowing out. However, the infantry was packed in so tight none of the puke hit the deck – it was all on them thankfully.

I was a 33, so I’m better with “Top” Tuna.

No joy on the P900 – and I’ve been hunting for it! Tankograd’s LVTP7 AAVP7A1 book has the most images of the P900 in one source that I’ve come across. I have a couple pictures as well, although P900 mounted armor is slightly before my time – on an AAV anyway. My current plan to model a P900 AAV is to use Eduard’s M113 Zelda Armor PE, it sort of looks the part in the pictures of the PE that I’ve seen. At least in 1/35 it might be convincing.
I remember we had BBQ pits at 3D AABN and AAS BN, used for raising ball money until the smiling gestapo (MWR/MCCS) squashed them. Anyway, that’s another rant. The BBQ grills were fabricated by the weld shop, mostly from empty oil and/or coolant 55 gallon drums. What was used for the grills? Why the old P900 armor cut to fit inside the 55 gallon drums. I’m sure (hoping) the carcinogens were all burned off by the time I got my burger.

Doing SOC certification in Okinawa, some of my Marines left unpleasant tasks for Ch-46 crew chiefs to deal with. Flying nap of the earth in the NTA while blacked out can also turn stomachs inside-out.

Great seeing attention on the LVTP-5

Makes me wonder when we are going to see the WIP LVTE-1 Potato Digger conversion from 3D in Scale... This is one I've wanted for many years!!

http://www.3dinscale.com/WIP.html

Got a donor kit waiting patiently for this baby, as seen in "The Boys in Company C" and "Apocalypse Now," of course... Come ta Papa!!

With Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

Great topic

I will interested in seeing the book when it comes out.

I have always been an LVT fanatic and have scratch built in 1/35 a lot of LVT's that where not available in plastic kits. I did scratch build some experimental ones as well other types of vehicles.

Have a look at my web page not all are in there.

http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/scratch-builder/library/?sort=2&page=1

I have been looking for some one that has accesses to Camp Barstow to take detailed pictures of the experimental LVT's that are left and a lot where scraped when they moved them there.

Thank you for any help.

Cheers,

Ralph
