Here's a couple of pics of my current project, an abandoned whitewashed Tiger 1. The thought is that the tank was abandoned in the late Winter and it's now the following autumn, hence the fallen leaf cover. Tank is the Tamiya Mid Production Tiger with Verlinden engine. There's a fair but work still to so on the details but it's taking shape:

Hi John,

The diorama is looking very good so far and the figures are nice too.

I would recommend adding more smaller branches to the trees as there are too many leaves on the ground for the amount of branches currently on the dio.

Keep it up,

Chas

What technique did you use for the chipping? I'm gathering info on various white-wash weathering techniques and yours looks very convincing.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Chas - the trees are very much a work in progress at the moment, there are a number of smaller branches as well as some foliage to be added.

Jason - This was my first attempt at a paint job like this so I made it up as I went along for th emost part as follows:

1. An overall coat of Tamiya Dark Yellow was applied.
2. Where I wanted large areas of the original colour to show, I then applied Humbrol Maskol over the yellow.
3. An overall, fairly light coat of white was added.
4. The maskol was removed leaving the large patches of the original colour.
5. Next, using part of a scouring pad, the smaller chips were added by picking up paint on the pad and then dabbing over the model with both the dark yellow and german grey.
6. Edges where paint is missing were done with a small brush with the german grey.
7. The whole model was given a wash of Mig Smoke pigment heavily diluted with water and then Mig Russian Mud pigment was dusted all over - the reduces the brightness of the colours and ties everyting together.

Nice work, good composition, a couple of small things about the ground cover. I'm not trotally convinced by the big clumps of yellow grass- you could maybe bend over some of the stalks and add a darker colour lower down.
The figure in front looks odd his left arm is forward with his left foot. This is very hard to do if you are walking naturally and I've only ever seen confused recruits doing it

Really good dio though.

Thanks for that Pat, as it happens, my wife has been telling me that there is something not quite right with the long grass so i'll give your idea a go. As for the figure, I'm stuck with him (I really, really suck at figure painting so the figures were bought ready painted from a guy in the States).

John, I do like your diorama -contrary to Chas I am not shocked by the amount of leaves as the wind blows hard during winter months and could have move quite a few leaves here and there. Actually it's this amount of leaves I pretty like.
I am with Pat with your yellow grass with this precision:
1/ the shape is not right, it really looks like some broom hair, the tip of the individual hair must be pointy and cut in a more uneven way.
2/ the colour is actually what i like about your diorama most! But it has to be thinned down.
The yellow is great (thinned down with a bit of white and brown though) BUT on the end of the hair! Go and take a walk in Britain on the winter and you will see that the bits of tall herbs is certainly brown. So take your airbrush and maybe do something about those
JB
[edit]I meant the top of the weed is usually yellow and the part near the ground more brown. it doesn't show in this reeds pictures, but you can see that the yellow colour is quite credible

It wasn't the amount of leaves I had a problem with JB, it was the lack of branches! Can we put this down to misunderstanding of English? No worries though

Thanks for the pic JBA, I've started toning down the yellow towards the bottom with some burnt umber and burnt sienna oils.

Hi John,
I had actually seen this elsewhere and i must say i love the groundwork!
The whole scene looks very nice composition wise, but may i suggest a product that would be a similar to what JBA suggested?
If you check out my pond dio on the forum, there are some reeds that i have used from Joefix that would fit perfectly in your dio.
I'm not sure if Joefix have a dealer in the UK, but here's a link to their site
Cheers,
Shay

John,
I like the leaves! I do have a couple of suggestions.

Zimmerit, That TIger would have had a coat -

OVE - It might give the abandoned look if the cables and tools were off.

The hatches look a bit too clean, maybe some washes?

Nice work!

Thanks for the comments guys.

Shay - those reeds look good, might just have to invest in some

Chris - you are right about the cables and the tools but removing them now would undoubtedly damage the finish so I'm stuck with them. As for the zimeritt, I'm told that some mid production Tigers didn't have it some I'm assuming that this is one of them. As for the hatches, they have had a couple washes and don't look as bright in real life but I will tone them down a bit more.

I've started work on the tree foliage which is Woodland Scenics 'Fall' foliage. Out of the packet, it is far to bright so it has been given a green wash to tone it down. The foliage still needs some tweaking to remove some of the straight edges:

Hi
Its coming along great. As for the zimmerit i wouldn't worry to much about it as I've got a picture somewhere of a late tiger with an early turret on it,you can clearly see the steel wheels and dustbin type copular so it may be a hybrib!!! Keep up the good work.

Nice work on the dio, love the washed Tiger

Question though - how did you get the fallen leaves to look so right?
