Lucky Models has the Tamiya Staghound (TA 89770) for $40 plus s/h. Can someone provide me a recommendation on whether to get her or not.
thanks

I've heard it's a decent kit, it's just a re-boxing of the Italeri kit.

The Tamiya Staghound is the Italeri Staghound boxed for domestic Japanese consumption. I believe they added some figures that aren't with the Italeri kit.

It's a 'decent' kit, the Bronco Model one is a brilliant kit.

As for the figures - 1970s Tamiya. Who could ask for anything more?

Hi
Knowing it's a rebox of the Italeri kit i'd buy it if the price was right. Some such as Jim would describe it as a decent kit but I'd go as far as Terry Ashley did in his review and describe it as an excellent kit.
That's to take nothing away from Broncho's excellent kit but neither should Italeri's be disregarded as it stands up not only to today's standards but well in comparison to Broncho's.
Anyway I hope to buy and build it some time soon.
If you want to see how well it builds into a nice looking model check this out.

Many thanks for your responsives which have made the decision process that much easier. Here are few cost figures that I discovered:
Lucky Model Italeri Staghound (IT 6459) $29.99 plus s/h. Tamiya Staghound (TA 89770) $40.99 plus s/h.
Dig this
Squadron Tamiya Staghound $69.30 plus s/h. Amazing!
Guess which one I just ordered?
Thanks for the websites especially the Planet Armor one.
Great feedback, many thanks

AFAIK, the Tamiya/Italeri comes out more expensive than the Bronco one. My main bone of contention is, to do an accurate model with the Italeri one, you DO have to replace the barrel. Check out this thread:
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/112995#930632
If Bronco had simply stopped with the Mark I then things would have been absolutely even - no question about it. Instead, Italeri are only doing the one versions whereas Bronco are doing or have done the Mk.III, the AA variant, and the version with the 60lb Rockets. Far more potential and far more imaginative than simply the Mk. I... I'm not disregarding the Italeri version, there's an issue with Bronco's over the shape of the rear turret (whereas Italeri's is spot-on) . I just don't see Italeri as the most imaginative of companies.... That simple..

My Friend -- to the purist I am sure Bronco is the best choice. To those suffering from the financial ills of the current "crisis," the Italeri kit will work just fine.

Luckymodel had the Italeri Staghound on sale a couple of weeks ago for $23.. and stupid me ordered only one!! I also got the Griffon Barrel that Tery suggests. If you're not a rivet counter.. the Italeri kit looks very nice.. it has some stowage.. and is a much simpler build than Bronco's complicated kit... It's just perfect for my humble modelling skills!
I just can't believe I ordered only one at that price

Jim-- I am right with you. I hate the "look" I get when I lay out the details of my exhaustive marketing research. I always get the same response, "you got another model?" And I always provide the same reply:
"Yes dear, I did."
Stay safe

With the addition of 'Didn't you buy another one last year?' I'm going to start a counter-attack when she buys 'fripperies' like shoes, t-shirts or such ridiculous articles as skirts...

Hi DJ,
I have the Italeri and Bronco Staghounds in my stash.
Thank goodness my LHS gives me a discount, both kits cost me about the same amount here in the "Great White North", about $55.99 CDN.
While both are nicely done, the Bronco kit is by far the better kit.
The Italeri/Tamiya kit will needs new gun barrels as both the plastic and aluminum ones supplied are inaccurate.
FYI - a friend of mine got the Tamiya re-box and the figures included are from the Universal Carrier North West Campaign that I believe was released in the 1990's.
Cheers

I'm sorry Jim, and of course we are all entitled to our opinion, but I disagree with your comment about lack of imagination.
Look back over Italeri's current catalogue and what they've produced in the past. Many AFV's have not been produced by any other kit maker.
The Opel Blitz was up until recently only made in 1/35 by them, and even then Tamiya's effort didn't exactly kick it into touch when it finally appeared. Then you consider the variants they made on that kit, Maultier, Radio Truck, Coal Truck, Armoured body with Nebelwefer etc.
You got several Demag & SWS German Halftracks, with variations of flak and rocket launcher mounted variations that nobody else produces.
The RSO in both it's cab variations and the Pak mounted model.
The popularity and high price the Bergepanther achieves on ebay only shows it's something people want, even knowing it's faults, and again apart from the ICM early version nobody has produced it despite them having probably a lot of existing moulds to make most of it.
Then what about the Camionetta AS42 Sahariana, another unique AFV only made by Italeri and although its not an AFV the S.L.C. "Maiale" two man sub.
I'm sure there are a few others like the Sherman recovery, I could mention. Crusader anybody else ? including the anti aircraft variation.
I'm sure there are others but I think I've made my point. I know the detail can be a bit soft in comparison and the pin marks/sink holes can be frustrating to those use to some of the more up to date makers but I still think we'd be a lot worse off for choice without some of the "imaginative" choices Italeri has made in what kits to offer.
As for getting a kit in the house, past the "buying department" make sure she's got a job that hours coincide with the postman's delivery times and you have quick and easy access to the loft space

Hi Guys,
I ended up with 2 of the Italeria kits ( forgot I had placed a pre order) lol, lo and the Bronco kit.
With this particular kit I'd agree that Bronco have given us some nice variations, to build on but I'd also agree that Italeri have given us some interesting and unusual models not marketed by anyone else. Both I think will build into excellent models.
Now if only either or both would do some new Bedfords or 15cwts I'd be very happy
The increase in British/Commonwealth vehicles is a joy to see and should keep me building happily for years to come, but I do want to see more trucks, and also some more armoured cars and early British Armour.
I'm looking forward to Broco's A13, so I look forward to the next 12 months hoping the plastic manufacturers have finally woken up to the possibilities in the British/Commonwealth market. The recent issues would suggest they have!! Lets hope developments continue.

Hi Jim Rae. Not sure whether you were serious or just busting on Tamiya....but those figures that are included in the Tamiya Staghound are not 1970s figures. They are the same set that was included with the second version of their Bren Carrier. I think that must have come out sometime in the early 00s. They actually aren't too bad as Tamiya figures go -- ceratinly much better than their 1970s offerings.
