CD, iPod or web radio
Sometimes I turn on the 'slide show' feature and let it run through the photos I've saved (mostly WWIi reference stuff)
Lately I've found some 1950's si-fi radio programs on web radio which are pretty interesting.

I am modeling at my desk, so most time I surf through the internet or play a session of a PC-game (Civ4-BTS).
Saturday afternoon I am listening Bundesliga soccer on the radio.
But there is an other thing:
After I managed it to finish a model I feel tire and desinterested in modeling anything and take a while to go on working with the models in progress.
I noticed that the gaps of the periods of distraction become longer.
So happened after I assemled my X-Wing 1/48 three weeks ago....

Since these three weeks I have been doing nearly nothing on my workbench.

Quoted TextQuoted TextEither music or a WWII movie. I usually pick one that doesn't have too many distracting scenes or sounds but I do find myself watching most of the movie anyway.
Jeff-- like Victory At Sea?
DJ
I hate commercials, so it's something that I've seen a billion times, just enough to keep me building. Like PATTON, BOB, or even Band Of Brothers. Like I said, I end up watching most of it anyway. I haven't seen "Victory At Sea" but I did like "The Enemy Below".
Music? Most rock from the 70's and 80's. KISS, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Boston, Van Halen, etc, etc. Usually placed on shuffle play so the list is unexpected.
Jeff-- You might want to get a copy of the series. It is very well done. The narrative is thought provoking and the music is very well synchronized with the film. While most of the films has been seen a zillion times, I find it a very well made production.
Try it

I'm really in the minority here as I like to keep the work area quiet. That's a rarity as my kids are using in the basement while I'm there, but when I've got it to myself, I like the silence.
I think it stems from informational overload at work, constant conference calls, busy family stuff, etc. It's just nice to turn that side off once in awhile.

what do you do to distract you during the more repetitive and tedious efforts of building?
Watch the neighbours' cats stalking each other. Or now that it's dark in the evenings, go and read a book for a bit 'til I get the feeling back in my fingers - building a Trumpeter KV at the moment so there is a good deal of sanding. Followed by more sanding.

DJ,
Well, I teach all day.
So it is nice to do something I choose to do and not pay attention while someone ELSE talks for a change...
I've got too much random music on the iPod to shuffle.. imagine getting into the fiddliest bits of an Aber set and have some old heavy metal come blasting directly into your brain.
Doesnt work for me.
sometimes Bob Segar, some Warren Zevon, but even that on shuffle has wide ranges of rhythm.
Mostly podcasts.

Mike-- now I can relate to the Silver Bullet Band! Great sounds. Try watching Victory At Sea for some great narrative and mood music.

Nothing visual, just the radio or music. If I watch a movie during track link building, I'll never finish.

Depends. If I can find it, some matching music i.e 1960s/70s when building Vietnam-era stuff or Marschmusik if building a Panzer V.
Otherwise whatever show is on TV. I found StarGate re-runs to be useful while Doctor House (first run) or Shark are distracting
