I'm looking for options for making pine boughs. I know that Hudson and Allen made these items...however..it looks like they are not available anymore.

What else can I use to recreate pine boughs??

Take a treip to Michaels or AC Moore or other large craft store, if you have one near you and check out their dried flower section. This is a good time, too, because they will have a lot of Christmas stuff in stock.

Hello Bart,

The best way to make a tree (pine) is to use natural materials, using "esparragera" or similar plants.

I walk through the bush, I found something quite real and use it, not found esparragera ...

You get link to see how I stayed and also link to the pdf file explaining how to do the trees.

There used to be a plant called an "air plant" (don't have a Latin name for it). I used to see it in the fish aquarium section of K-mart and Meijer. It was a live plant that did now require dirt. It was VERY delicate with a bright green coloration. I have not looked for, nor seen it in years. You may be able to find it at craft stores like Michel's or Hobby Lobby - not sure if any of these are in the Canadian market... all can be found in the Detroit or Port Huron area if you are close to those ports of entry.

Something a little more local would be 'peat' or sphagnum moss. It has to be dry to look like pine boughs and you will have to pick through a clump to find the shapes you want. It is inexpensive, and found almost anywhere.

Good Luck,
Mark L.

Fernando is on the right track. I think if you can source asparagus fern it may have the look you are after. Not as thick as the H&A stuff, but with some creative application can really look sharp.

I'm sorry if leads you down the wrong path, but there is a company in the US that sells this moss type of plant. I'm sorry but I dont remember the name of it but I got it from "Bagdone Enterprises"(spelling).

Cheers Jason

I used these too and was very pleased. The company was Bragdon Enterprises. You can purchase them HERE. They haven't had the trunks in stock for a long time now, but they are pretty easy to replicate from dowels rounded with a Dremel.

The "air plant" is also called air fern. I don't know if it is the same as the asparagus fern. I have seen it at hobby lobby. I was looking in my garden and thought that dill might work for pine as well.

Hi Bart,

not exactly knowing what do you look for at this stage, but i made some tests and posted them a few weeks ago in my Clervaux thread, i simply copy /paste it here, perhaps you can get an inspiration in here.
Have fun
Claude

Then i build some pine and spruce trees. (they are all the same height of some 16 cm.

One with moss

I think the look is good, and i will build more of them, but while i have boxes full of this moss, i forgot to flatten them , so they are to much curled now and i need to wait for spring for the next harvest.
Then i made one with aspargus fern (i grow it myself in pots)

I worked to fast and drilled to big holes. Instead of redoing the trunk i continued, on't ask me why.
So, the fern often turned on his axe and did not sit well. Ok, it's a test, i learned from it, that was the goal of the exercice.
Than i made one with a commercial product from Silflor. While the look is really good, the cost isn't, as this 16 cm tree costs me nearly 20 $.
The tree is in the middle of this group photo.

There is room for improvement in my execution here also, but, yes, it was a test. I ordered some more to give it a final test and it doesn't hurt the diversication in my dio to get another sort of tree.
The tree on the right side

is a product produced as such from Mother Nature, to be found in humid areas. It's a moss growing up smaller trunks.

While from this picture it seems not to be a good choice i will show you (again, maybe) a picture of one of my earlier dios where they are , IMO, not to bad

Hi Claude,

Some trees are magnificent, very good. The more that I like is done with moss, I feel more real because it is not as flat as the tree is done with Esparreguera.

It would be wrong that could send a box with moss .(jajajajajaja ... I say this in roar and seriously too... We would speek...)

Finally, make the remark to work a little more trunks, that is, textures and painted them, so they do not look so naked.

Regards,
Fernando Sancho.

Pd: I`m sorry for my english.
