I'm not a huge fan of WWII German armor, although I certainly like the low slung and menacing look of the StuGs. Your IV is a very well done example of the breed. I think the camo pattern looks great.

Nice work.

Hi Yoni,
Yes the menacing look of stugs has always drawn me to them. Thankyou for your kind words, especially pleased that the camo turned out well.
I actually finished this last night and will try and get some better pics soon.

Thanks,

James

I think they will do just fine. I like the finished model, can't wait for some excellent pictures with the crew. IMHO yours is better tho!

Perhaps Justin, but your stug is still great and I've had more practice over the years!
As mentioned will try and get some pics taken soon, unfortunately though the Irish weather is preventing me from getting some decent outdoor shots, and indoor light doesn't come out well as you can see from the last (and primer) pics.

Thanks,

James

Cold and wet is the case here, the most anoying thing however is that due to daylight saving time it now gets dark here at 4.30pm on a gloomy day so its pitch black by the time I get home from work, combine this with wet mornings and it doesn't leave much room for photo taking!

Okay gents (and ladies in the tiny possibility any look at this thread!),

In under 3 weeks from start to finish (including several days off) here is the finished build:

I intend to mount this on a simple wooden base if I find a suitable one next time i'm down the LHS.
And some detail shots......

I enjoy answering your questions so fire away! hope you like,

James

Thanks Chicane,

I'm from the west Midlands but have lived in Tyrone for a few years now. I used to have NI as my 'location' but so often people take it as who you are rather than where you are from and so to avoid confusion I changed it to West Midlands.

Where abouts are you?

Awsome job on your stug James.
I really like the paint scheme and the weathering,The primered areas where the zimmerit came off is very nice.I'm going to try that out with the black barral, very eye catching.
I put an end to taking pics outside in the winter after I nearly destroyed two models by accidently dropping them, frozen hands will do it all the time.
Once again an awsome model you have there.

James,

I wish I could be as fast as you are...

I like the camo you made. The "standard" pattern and the disc, rare pattern give together a very interesting look to your build. The weatheing is really good on the upper hull and I love the stowage. In general I like a lot the upper hull and skirts (beside one point you'll find just below)

I hope you won't take it wrong but I'm not convinced about few things.
The scratches you made looks really good but I feel like they're a little bit too bright/ white. I started this way the scratch work on the last befehl tiger II. I was just using Humbrol 121 paint. I quickly switched to the lighter base colour as it was too light. It does look well on the zimmerit (even it should look this way from what I know as zimmerit past was a kind of white/beige) . It does look too bright IMHO. It makes look the scratches not natural. It's a little bit overdone also on the side skirts.
Where I'm also not convinced is the lower hull and tracks. The lower hull is a single colour mass, some pigments, even a light coat of mud, dirt would make it look better. The wheels could be painted in a different way. The muddy colour paint on them doesn't look very well . And finally tracks , I'm not convinced by their colour. Looking at the pictures I have impression that you painted tracks all lower hull, road wheels, sprockets and idlers with the same light muddy colour. If you don't want to add mud some washes on the lower hull and wheels would add depth to the whole lower thing.

Still mates?

I hope

NAIL'D HERR ! love it but like Spit the tyres don't look right. No problem with the tracks ? Dust the tyres up, remember tyre contact (dead top) were normally cleaned ars the tracks run past. NICE ONE JAMES ENJOY'D FROM THE START And your 1st zim, what can you say.....S..t Hot! Off to Telford today, cash only no cards you know the score 3 kids and santa is coming . That Stug should have blown that sledge and him back to Mars where he came from. X mas as gone to the dogs

Thanks for all your kind words Rob,

Am also quite pleased with how the primed barrel and primer under the zim came out, these will be techniques I try again when I (finally) tackle my Tiger 1.
Hasn't been cold enough to freeze my hands yet this year, its dodging the rain clouds and early darkness that make photographing my builds a real pain. Perhaps i'll have to make my blogs a summer event!

Thanks again for all your support,

Don't worry Spit I won't fall out with you!

Thanks for your compliments glad you liked the upper half!
To answer your points:
Usually I use a slightly darker colour for chipping under dunklegelb, but its a Revell enamel and wasn't in good condition when I came to use it, therefore I substituted a humbrol colour, yes it was 121, and agree it looks a little light, I has hoping a bit of weathering would minimise this but agree it is probably a little light. In future I may mix it with a bit of humbrol 93 to blend it better with dunklegelb.
I experimented a lot on this build and my lower hull weathering was one of the bigger ones, I did spray the whole lower hull (tracks included) in one eart color, thinking I could add basic details of colour to mimic a very dusty lower hull. As you say it didn't really work and I probably won't be using it again, it was simply a quick way to finish the hull without having the hassle of painting the tracks seperately.

I appreciate the critisism mate, its good to get honest opinions, especially when usuing some new techniques.

Cheers!

Thanks Gerraint,

See spits reply for some of the reasons behind my lower hull painting. The tyre contact was drybrushed with black at first for the very reason you mention, however, I wasn't happy and added a very very thick black wash to the wheel rubber to give the effect you see. Not the best decision in hindsight but never mind.

Glad to have you along for the build, hope you enjoyed Telford and xmas is still on!

Cheers,

No worries Jason,

Thanks, its been a speedy build and i've learnt a lot along the way so its been fun. Great to have a break from my Churchill that i've been building for months! Back to the grindstone with that now though!
