Gee, ya know, I really like looking at your latest build in progress or finished diorama. But do we really need 16 photos of the same piece from slightly different angles?

I think that this is exact purpose of build blogs... showing step-by-step whole build with all details. For main forum threads I think that 2-3 pic is rally enough in most ocassions but I would feel unsatisfied seeing only one or two pictures of detail packed model.
Summary ( ): it depends on where and what one wants to show.

I agree that there SHOULD be as much 'diversity' as possible in angles etc. but, i'd sooner see the images duplicated than NO images at all....

Well, yes, I want to see pictures also. And build logs and features need lots of pictures. But why post 30 pics when 5 will do? M. Sato posted just 3 pics of his Carrier conversions, and I think that was enough to show his most excellent work.

Well here is my take on all those pictures. I don't look at them because it takes to long to load them. I don't have high speed internet so it takes a long time to load all those pictures that look just like the last one. One thing that would help is to resize the pictures so it does not take as long to load them. I look in on build logs and sometimes it takes forever to load the pictures till their is no room left. I'm left with a little box with a red x. I load those pictures one at a time till I see all I want. I don't really see the need of showing multiple shots with small angle changes. I'm sure others will disagree with me but that is ok. Remember if you resize the pictures it will help everyone.

I have recently noticed an increase in the use of Photobucket to host and link pictures. That one particularly annoys me, because it is possibly the slowest image hosting site around.

I would rather post up 20 pictures and have you view 6 than need 6 and only have 3, I am aware of the slow loading problem which tends to occur when very large files have been placed on an outside gallery or slow service provider. I know when this occurs in the threads you have no real choice but to wait for them to load which can be annoying, in the OD and Build features you can at least pick and choose what you look at.

What would be the best to host your pictures? I know of photobucket and some others, but which is the best one to use? I have a camera now (not the best) but I would like to possably try a build and need to know where to find a host for photo's.

Hi
I use Photobucket for most of my pic's mainly because I've got about 6 builds on the go at the moment & not enough storage space on here for the pic's. Also If you have some finished models/campaign pic's that takes up storage space leaving even less space to upload pic's. So the only way was for me to use a media site. I've never had problems with the speed that the pic's upload when I'm looking at other peoples pic's that are stored on here or the likes of photobucket. Unless this site can allow you to store as many pic's that you want wether that be for current use or previous builds then your going to see more & more modellers using photobucket etc to store the pic's on.

The problem occurs usually when very large files are used which are larger than 800 X 600 pixels, on most occasions if the pictures are this size the problems are reduced or non existent

The web is a visual media by and large, our hobby is base very much around what we see as much as what we read. The more the merrier I say.
Never had any major delays in load up problems on posts even when I had my old computer.
It might take a few moments, but is usually worth it.

Delays in load up are not what I'm addressing. I just don't like having to scroll down through 6 pics of the muffler to get to 7 pics of the left rear idler followed by 14 pics of the left running gear from slightly different angles.

I say more is better. The scroll wheel on my mouse works fine. You never know what people are after.

Probably an extreme example, but none of us here are professional photographers. It takes time and effort to up load and post pics so if the sequence isn't always to our liking do we shoot the messenger - I think not.
Rather we should say, thank you for you efforts and perhaps point out that 2 or 3 pictures of the running gear would have been just fine.

Perhaps I should expand or explain, my problem is not per se with the use of Photobucket et al, but, as Darren points out, the size of the pictures. This is getting worse, becuase more people are getting cameras that shoot bigger size pictures. Many (most? Some?) people upload their pics straight from the camera, with out resizing the pics. Average camera now probably shoots 5 or so MPx? Those file sizes are playing havoc with load times. please re-size your pics to 800x600 px. That is more than enough for web viewing.
I'm not sure what the problems are with uploading photos in the gallery. If you are logged into the gallery, and you have space, it should be easy. But perhaps there is a problem with member accounts that I don't experience.

And then there is someone that hits Reply & Quote instead of Reply, so we have to scroll down through the 37 pictures again just to read "Good job!"

Yeah well that is annoying, but where the forum hosts and moderators will step in if necessary - as for the original argument, my opinion: the more the merrier

Well the more the merrier is a poor excuse to keep going in this direction. I can't see all of the pictures in some threads now. I believe the big problem is that all the pictures need to be resized before put on line. The other problem is photo envy ( I got to have the most pictures off this project on line) than the last thread. We need to educate ourselves that we we can do better with less. Just my 2 cents worth, I'll see what I can and pass on the rest

A good photo site is Fotki.
They will give you free place to put your pictures with some limitations as it is free, however for the paltry sum of $30 a year, you have unlimited space, and you can upload as big of a picture as you want.
I always found Fotki alot easier to use, and user friendly than Photobucket!

Isn't that what the reply and quote button is for? Seems to me there is a lot of moning going on about nothing, or even worse someone is trying to dictate how many pictures people should upload, most un-democratic and some what selfish.
If people want to upload 1 picture or 20 pictures then that's fine by me, it's their choice and their hard work to post them. If I look at 6 or 10 and decide that's enough, I just move on to the next thread or add a comment if appropriate.
I'm not keen on the larger pictures myself, take up too much space, but I've been guilty of that when I've used review pics in a built log. Them's the brakes as they say.
Don't have any issue with Photobucket works for me so far.

Unfortunately at the moment, the time I have available is really restricted, but when I do have a chance to visit Armorama ... its threads like these that get >20 posts, and the actual modelling threads are hardly even viewed.

I thought Jim had installed some uploading limits, where a max size and max viewing size was automatically set!
