what would be the closest match for the green seen on Israeli armour, without mixing?

If you want to use Tamiya, I think you will have to mix. FWIW, here's a paint chip I got from Mark Hazzard at AMPS...2001? It seems that the 50:50 mix matches it pretty closely - keep in mind this is just scanned on my flatbed scanner, but pretty much identical shade in the 'actual view'. It's what I usually use, although I have tried Lifecolor and PollyScale, I always futz around with post-shading and 'filters' too.

You have a problem? You know the Merkava? You have good constructive criticism to give?

PM me and I shall help.[/quote]

No, No, and No.

I believe you misunderstood my post. The earlier discussion revolved around the IDF painting their vehicles only one color, which looked different in different light. The original post referred to the shade of green used on the tank in a picture that he saw. You shared information with us that let us know that a specific vehicle was painted a non standard color, green. This information completely changed the conversation because it added the information that there is/was at least one IDF tank that was painted green and not gray.

Perhaps I should have explained myself more clearly the first time around. My comment was not meant to offend in any way.

Hi Marek,

Yes the Merkava III is a very poor kit in terms of accuracy and just in terms of its basicness, the turret and rear bins are indicators for this, BUT if you have got it for a good price and you enjoy making models without counting rivets this is a good kit to build and to practice your techniques.

As for color let me tell you this the Merkava III featured on Israeli armor is the prototype built in the 1990's and was in fact painted that dark green. I made my dark green for this kit by mixing Tamiya Nato olive and Tamiya desert sand to approximately Green 4:1 Desert. Adjust with black and white to get fade.

Since this Academy kit closely resembles the prototype it is feasible to paint it this green color as this what it was painted as a non operational color straight from the factory in Haifa. It was this color for unknown reasons. This is not a light affect, the photographs are pretty accurate for colour, for instance I know that is Israeli earth, I know the black, and I know track color.

If you are building a Merkava as a combat unit armored corps vehicle then a sandy karkhi is abetter color to use.

I hope this helps you.

Perhaps you could confirm this Neil, but my understanding of Testors/MM's Israeli SandGrey is that it represents a recent colour used by the IDF & is meant to help vehicles blend into the environment, especially pre-dawn or pre-dusk light conditions, when the ambient light takes on a pinkish/greyish hue. IIRC, the IDF modelling site explains this in better detail

IMO that looks like the aircraft green as used on F-16's, etc.

I did some digging and I came up with Tamiya colors Xf-49 and Xf66 in a 50/50 blend. I did not come up with this myself, I found it on another modeling forum.

Marek,

Personally for later IDF armour (say 1980's onwards) I have used and like XTRACOLOR X810 from Hannants "Israeli Tank Sand / Grey'. When sprayed, it goes on like a very muted olive green. I have some pics of an IDF 1/35 M60 6B GAL in my "My Features" profile that I used this color for and to my eyes and IMHO, it looks pretty close to the actual colour. It's also a readily available brand as well.

Use what colour / paint brand you think looks best from the multitude of options suggested.
HTH
regards.

Here also: Testor's MM SAC bomber tan for later stuff, nice green/gray/tan mix, changes with the light just like the real thing.
