I have the old tamiya KVII kit and took it out yesterday for a build. But looking at it I was wondering if there is any better with more modern tooling done to this kit.

Would it be worth getting the Trumperter KVII. Anyone build both and can tell me what is best.

Its a no-brainer ... Trumpeter is the best. Its supposed to be very accurate for a later version KV2.
Only you can decide whether its worth buying it or building what you have ... maybe sell the Tamiya and buy the Trumpeter? They are comparitevly cheap!!

The Trumpeter is the better kit, it builds up nicely.

Trumpeter is by far the better kit and even though you would have to shell out the cash, all the work you would have to do to update the tamiya kit is already done for you without all the aggravation. I built both , of course more recently the trump. and it builds up beautifully, you get the correct scribed headlight lens , metal tow cables and the fenders and brackets are almost paper thin. You also get link and length track that has the sag already molded in. I cant say enough good things about the trump. kit. I have been building for 30 years now and it is one of my favorite kits that I built, good luck, Jim Rosado

The Trumpeter KV tank series is I feel the best value for money kits I have ever bought. Yes you can throw more money at the kits for some AM items, but they are not really needed.

Hey Jack,
Take it from a fellow Canuck, get the Trumpeter kit !!!!
While the Tamiya kit was good in it's day, the Trumpeter kit's light years ahead of it in quality and detail.
All of Trumpeter's KV series are worth a look including the early version of the KV-II, the so called "Big Turret" KV.
Cheers

p.s. Welcome back to the site !!!

Agreed. The Trumpy KVs are among my very favorite kits, not just for the subject matter, but in terms of "bang for the buck".

The Trumpeter kit is hands down the best mainstream KV2 kit out there. The old Tamiya one was a pain in the perverbial, and over here in Australia the Trumpeter one is half the price of the old Tamiya one. Believe me, when it comes to KV kits, you'd be stupid to not get any of the the Trumpeter offerings.

Tanks everyone.....Trumperter it is...

Looking on-line at some of the spruces...the trumperter kit does seem to be better representation.

I guess I will have to make a trip to the local hobby shop this Saturday....Yippieee.

Hi

I apologise in advance for posting a link to another site showing an example of this kit built as I'm sure there are many here posting images of excellent builds, but this guy's painting and finishing on tanks etc. is outstanding.

Here is his rendition of the KV-2 which amazingly I understand he's stripped off, not happy with and is starting again !! I'd be more than happy to be half this good.

KV2 Build.

If you are interested check out his build of a Stug, also on the site.
Sergiusz's Stug Build
the attention to detail and the finished results of his painting and weathering are some of the best I've ever seen.

Like most of the guys i'd have to say 100% the Trumpeter KV is the best Tamiya's version is simply out of date and doesn't measure up

Having built both kits, I would say Trumpeter. In fact, get all of their KVs, including Is and IIs. They are dirt cheap in comparison to the detail offered, after I built their KV-II, I rushed to my LHS to buy all the different Trumpeter KV versions they had . Tamiya's KV is old and just can not match up with a recent kit, so it's a waste of money compared to Trumpeter (here it is $6 more expensive than the Trumpeter kit, it's just not worth that).

Gotta love those slogans in pseudo-Russian. Illustration to an article "How to write with an accent"

On a serious note: totally agree with previous comments. For a historically accurate model Trumpeter is the only choice so far.

Great build by golly.
I wish the pics were in sequence though.
Thanks for sharing that.

Alan - thanks for posting that, and I have to agree that this guy's work takes your breath away.

I think that we're all own own harshest critics, but like you say - it's utterly amazing that any modeller wouldn't be happy turning out work of that calibre.

It's also some of the best painting & weathering that I've ever seen as well. Every bit as good as Mig and the other well-known masters.
