Hello there, for some time I have been complating the problems of WW1 airfields, and although there are some photo's, none are quite what I have in mind, and therefore was wondering if anyone has ever built a WW1 air field, buildings, tower etc etc etc, I am getting heavily into 1-72 at the moment as this is a big step up from 1-350, and ideas are seemingly like a buzz-saw inside my head, and would like to keep things small but very busy, I could really use some help here, but no matter how hard I try, there are thousands of people out there and only a few that like WW1 so its a bit of a battle all round, look forward to your reply.

Hey Alec, there were no buildings really, it depends on where it was, Squadrons moved all the time, sometimes using Fields with tents or using the very few civillia Aerodromes that were around,
my best bet would be a feild with a barn at one side or such, no real hangars or anything, squadrons used to use trees for cover from recce planes also,
hope this helps

You can also look at RailRoad layout products for 1/72 stuff so Check out the ModelGeek side of KitMaker.

I agree with James, not a ton of 'stuff' on a WWI strip.
Be careful with scale in 1/72 ground works. Use really small stuff, and also look to use unconventional stuff. Use fine grit sandpaper (or even rough construction paper) for tarmacs, or dirt roads.

Not your scale, but you can check the work of Dolly15, here on the diorama forum,
"Albatros diorama" . I'll try to find the link.

Bye.

I have to imagine that everything was still within its infancy which for me is the crude beauty of this era, I like the idea of a simple grass field where the aircraft would be pushed under a tree to hide from German observers, very much like the film 'fly boys' as for the Albatros diorama, that is light years ahead of my ablities, so I have basically taken a short cut and decided on an open field with a few trees, thank you all for your replies.

1. unless it was an aerodrome, which were few and far beetween in france, it would be a field. probly grass, with maybe dirt where the grass had worn away on the primary runways.
