I think the age thing works as it is easier to delinate and it is all about getting fresh blood into the hobby and rewarding their increase in skills.
For what it's worth, I think this is a great idea. I think it would encourage younger modelers to enter, and foster increased interest in the catagory.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi to the TPTB
I consider myself a beginner and in fact i'm working on #6 right now. I like most youngsters, built a few planes and cars but that was over 50 years ago. After having two heart attacks i found myself with a lot of time on my hands so my brother suggested why not build some models again.
He gave me the URLs of a few model sites which stirred my interest again. I settled on tanks,SPGs of WW II mainly. I read and looked and read and looked somemore until I had a plan.
I bought an older DML Jagdtiger kit as well as all the AM stuff for it I could find off of e-bay.
With the suggestions, hints and tips from people on this site and many others here's what the results of my first attempt at tank modeling produced.
Because of my hard work and persistants I now find out i'm not a beginner at all but a born
pro. :-)--

Understood, but "most" real novices in this hobby (I've seen) don't always feel ready to make large investments in things like airbruhses, PE sets, etc. That was sort of my point. When I started in this hobby some 15 years ago I was lucky enough I could afford a nice-enough airbrush. So, I was still a novice but right out of the gate I started with an airbrush and with a model that looked, to my eyes, very well painted.

Thanks for the reply Darren, but it seems that as it stands now there are only 3 (yes,...3) viable entries for the June Novice competition.
The minimum number that I would like to see is 6 entries per month.
I just sent you my entry, I hope that we can do this begginner thing, its kind of intimidating to submitt with the regular guys! Hopefully we met the minimum entries for this class, maybe we will all grow a pair and submitt future entries in the expert class! good luck to everyone!!

When Rick and I discussed running two DMoM competitions for the novice members of Armorama with Henk, it was hoped that due to the fact that members would have a six month period to send in their entries it would give Armorama a good number of entries. The expected number of entries was worked out on the number of entries submitted to the DMoM competitions when two classes were held together over the previous six month period, we expected somewhere in the region of 10 entries or more. As it currently stands with less than six entries (I believe three) for the first novice DMoM I would give up.

Well as it stands this makes four eligible entries for the novice DMoM contest. Im afraid that it's not enough to bother with. We used to get more than that per month for the beginner class, and with a six month time frame we thought that we would see a larger number of entries. Maybe it's just the time of year, lord knows I haven't hit the workbench for over a month.
I will keep these entries and hopefully run a beginner class at a later time, hopefully like we planned it in December. I sincerly would like to thank all those that participated and hopefully we will have a novice contest in the future.
cheers

I would not drop the idea of the beginner class's contest that fast.
Most things do not work promptly after one attempt.
Each trial lets you see what needs to be improved.
I couldn't agree more, to end this before it begins, IMO, would be a disservice. Many of these builds are going to be by members that have never shown their work to the public, which is not an easy thing to jump into. I believe that once it gets rolling (which may take a few go rounds) and the rules are better developed, that the beginner class will be a worthwhile addition.

I see you posted while I was typing, so nevermind the above........
