Hi Guys

I just finished reading both books, Generation Kill and One Bullet Away. I also really enjoyed the boxset i bought of the TV series too. The amazing story and the fantastic and interesting charactors involved gave me an inspiration to build this model representing Sgt Colberts Humvee.

I based the kit on the actual vehicle used by Colbert and his team during the invasion of Iraq, NOT the Humvee portrayed in the TV series, althought that vehicle was a very good representation but not exactly perfect.

The kit was built from the Tamiya M1025. I converted verlindans humvee crew to represent the men wearing the MOPP gear and the gunner is MIg Productions. Pro Arts for the blue tracker and radio equipment (sadly hard to see in the photos) and various extra kit bits I had from my stash. I scratchbuilt a few bits where needed here and there too. Painted and weathered with Tamiya acyrilcs and mig pigments.

All comments, good or bad are welcome please!

I hope you enjoy the photos, thanks for looking

Very nice Roy. Eventhough I know squat about modern armor, Ive seen most of the episodes of the series. I like the fact all 3 soldiers have the forest camo while Wright is the only one with the desert camo. Very cool with all the excess stowage.

Thanks Guys!

I'll try take photos of interior some how later in the week

I spent alot of time on the Blue-Force Tracker and coms. The rear bed is packed with kit and I even had the AT-4 Rocket Launcher that Evan Wright wrote about that hung over his head behind him which kept banging off his helmet throughout the entire journey

Great job on this build! I had been looking to do the same one, but I have instead opted to model the vehicle ridden by a good friend of mine during the invasion. He was a lowly, 18 year old Pcf and combat engineer. His Humvee was a rag-top, flatbed version with a jerry-rigged 240 turret. I am definately going use your build as a little inspiration/reference! Again, great job. I really enjoyed the series of books and the show. You truly captured the feel with this one.

Oh yeah! I like this model very much.
Roy, You wrote, that You had portrayed the actual vehicle. I've got a question - what references did You use? Have You got any pictures of this and other vehicles from 1st Recon?

Hi Kuba, thank you for your comments

The Book by Evan Wright, Generation Kill, gives you about three angles of Colberts vehicle among others, more photos of different vehicles close up give you an idea of how the camo pattern was adapted (even if the photos are black and white), with a sharp eye you can make out the many differences from the TV series vehicle.

I was also lucky enough to save a few photos from a link posted in another armorama thread some time back which had 1st Recon photos from someones photobucket collection of the invasion in 2003.

In these photos I found a number of vehicles with the proper camo pattern and the correct colors which was very handy.

Lastly I scoured the internet for weeks looking for any photo material I could find. Googling everything i could think of that my turn up a reference to the subject. I found a few photos that came in handy. Some of which were pictures of Evan Wright with full MOPP gear, helmet and body armor, Colbert shooting from the window of a vehicle (good pic of his actual weapon) and a few other bits.

lastly i indeed have photos of other 1st recon vehicles, again the books have great material if you study them but I also have some of those photobucket pics, mostly of the flat bed variant with heavy weapon mounts. I must admit I have a bit of an itch to do Rudy's vehicle too so we'll see what happens. However I have a few other projects I want to catch up on in the meantime

I went to high school with Rudy and he is a friend of mine. I will get in touch with him and see if he has any photo's available of his 'real' HMMWV. Give me a couple of weeks though. I'm in a military course right now and have a couple of really busy weeks coming up.

Thats quite amazing Brent!

I appreciate your message and any effort you can make to help, I'd of course bump that project up to a priority if you can get good photo's. Just to let you know though there is no rush what so ever on timing, understandably work comes first and usually gets in the way of everything. I'm also on a military course in early July so by the time I get new materials ordered, ie new Tamiya kit and useful figures I guess I wouldnt be able to start the project until i'm back later in the month at the earliest anyway.

Best of luck with your course! Chat to you some time in the future I hope

Get a hold of the DVD Generation Kill by HBO. On the extra's DVD they have a great walk around of the Hummers that were used for the mini series. Ruddi and the producers said that these hummers were as close to what they actully had on the Operation.

Matthew - Well spotted mate! I have corrected this now, It did look worse in the photo somehow though, must of happened when I was putting the roof on..
(I had to put the figures in first due to fit problems after I had "enlarged" they're uniforms to represent the MOPP gear)

Jason - I have the DVD since its first day released, I loved it. As mentioned earlier I agree the vehicles are indeed an excellent representation but to a sharp eye you can spot the differences (especially the camo scheme including the color)

Thanks to you both for your comments guys

Nice concept and build. The only thing I don't like is the sand effect. It looks more like an aerosol can sandstorm, which in turn makes it look like oversized sand grain. The weathering can be tightened up a bit, especially on the figures.

..wow this old thread is really being given a second life today

Arnold: Hi-Res Pics always show up the worst of your handy work, however I wont make excuses here, point taken & thanks for your imput

Alex: Thanks for the kudos buddy, I'm far away from my PC (& my reference material) at the moment but I'll post the photos tommorow at some stage.
Color references are of other vehciles from the same unit during the invasion of Iraq, perhaps one vehicle might be Colberts Humvee but I cant confirm this. The most useful reference material though was made up from the two books, Generation kill (obviously) and One Bullet Away..

..post more tommorow
