The white-wash looks good to me!
I also made that with my german WW2 "machine". It was a artillery gun, which I brushed at first with airbrush in "panzer-grey". (dark-grey)
Then I painted it with a simple brush and thinned white color.

Thanks for the comments. I did this using oil paints, starting with a drybrush method with white, and then mixing in darker colors for shading.
