Do you have pictures to show it in use?

That type of T-80 is not in use for a long time in Russian army as I know.
Unfortunately I don't have any images with T-80UD early "IN ACTION".

I remember I saw some photos of T-80UD with early ERA type on this site

Sorry, I meant do you have a picture to show that ENGINE DECK in use. I have looked into this as much as someone outside of Eastern Europe can. Here is a link to my page on this: T-80 Help

Basically, it seems that Kharkov lobbied hard with Marshall Ustinov to allow them to build a diesel engined version of the T-80U, to be called the T-84. Ustinov denied the request, possibly up to three times...with a different prototype each time being presented. I believe the tank that SKIF based their kit on was one of these protoypes fitted with a Kharkov produced T-80U turret, possibly even the one used, after Ustinov's death, to convince the Army to allow them to produce T-84's, which were then allowed as the T-80UD. Kharkov built up 10 T-80UD with K-1/3 ERA before switching to the K-5 ERA setup, which would allow for some of the photos in the link. Also, Leningrad built 10 pre-production trial T-80U's that ended up going to Museums and as monuments...so we need to be carefull about what we use for ID. I have already gotten into trouble for this myself.

Which brings me back to my original statement...I think the T-80UD made from the SKIF kit is a prototype version. Unless there are pictures or documentation of more than one T-80UD with that type of engine deck setup, I cannot agree with THAT part.

But T-80U's and -UD's did serve with K-1/3 ERA, for sure. Just in small numbers and possibly rebuilt very soon after entering service.

Sorry to hijack the thread somewhat.

About this question you may ask btvt resource owners in private. I think they can answer to you.

All the best!

Hello,

I'm not Jacques - but I did ask a similar question a little while ago.

George Keseyen, (amongst others), was kind enough to reply. In his view, this vehicle is: " Object 478 Bereza prototype with a transition testbed turret complemented with new 1G42FCS but still featuring Cobra radio guidance block and T-64B's remote operated HMG. The turret shown would later evolve into Ob.476 - standard turret for T-80U/UD minus minor ERA arrangement differences, ROWS with 12.5mm NSVT machine gun and lack of Brod trunk hinge mechanism in diesel powered tanks".

At the time, Jacques also observed: "Notice that one of the gunner's sights is missing and the Kobra guidance sight is on the turret. Smoke Grenade Launchers are attached directly to the turret face. This all leads me to believe this is from a prototype or a technology demonstrator as it is very atypical", and that: "It has the Kobra guidance box, lacks the K-5 ERA mounts, has that "dip" in the frontal arc of the turret roof, and still has the remote Controlled Commanders AAMG".

1. I have "spoken" with "Harkonnen" somewhat about the T-80UD over the past 2-3 years. There has been NO confirmation or hint that the SKIF style engine deck was more than a prototype.

2. For T-80 developement, there is a LOT of stuff that went on. George probably has the best synopsis on the turret development. I would say that with Kharkov working on their designs and Leningrad working on not only their designs but also the 10 pre-production production tool-up tanks, that there is some strange stuff out there, real one-of-a-kind. Add into this that Marshall Ustinov was trying HARD to streamline tank production and design, and you will get even more variety.

Remember, the T-80 was a development to try to "fix" some of the problems of the T-64 while adding in the gas turbine engine, all without stepping on too many design bereau's toes or manufacturing plants bottom lines. What a wonderfull mess! Really. Since these one-off tanks still exist, they give a good insight into Soviet tank manufacture and design thinking at the time. But, of course, it adds another layer of problem for us modellers to figure out!

As for "not being Jacques", hey, I love the compliment it implies, but really, anyone can do what I am doing. I do not have any special contacts or special insights...I cannot even read Russian. I just do a lot of research and pay attention. So no fear of insulting me. I would be happy to see 100 T-80 tank researchers with me.

And I am excited to see what Guanghui's build finally looks like. He is doing a very good job and inspiring some excellent discussion.

Hi

I'm agree with Jacques its a really nightmare to follow the steps of the T-80 production each factory do small or bid modifications, books on Russian show items that we dont saw on the west like the T-80U with kontack 1-3 outside the factory( I dont remember the author but I have the book here on someplace) or the beautiful Leningrad T-80U that is on kubinka with flageagles on sideskirts, so as many of us looking for fun must made a lot of variants I have 6 t-80's waiting for that and build prototypes seems to be interesting like the 152mm T-80B that cannot enter production and one can use any cammo as it like "sci-fiction" on real tanks.

Good work indeed many ideas for inspiration keep working!!!!!

regards

You may ask him about this one directly. He know who and where photographed this tank.
May be it helps you.

That looks very good! Great build, paint and weathering!
I like the contrast of the dark (black?) side-skirts and the dust.

Great weathering on the skirts, the dust effect is great.

Will you be weathering the green also? It looks a little clean at the moment.

Really good job Fan B.
If I may I would suggest you give a more battered look to the unditching log. It is too "brand new" to me.
