Would it be politically, historically and artistically incorrect to have a german armor/vehicle painted in dark yellow with paint chips revealing dark grey base coat, if that vehicle was let's say in Normandy in 1944?

That is quite a blanket statement, but in general, late war German vehicles were primed primarily in a red oxide primer, but it has also been well documented that in some cases vehicles such as Panthers were rebuilt or remanufactured, and sometimes even new vehicles were painted in what ever was available at the time.
So in general, I would say that this was possible, but not very probable. If you really wanted to model a vehicle in dunkelgelb over dunkelgrey, then I would think an earlier war vehicle is a better choice.

Scott

Hi...It would depend on the vehicle..if it was an early war vehicle...for example a Panzer IV Ausf. D that was still in use in 1944 it is highly possible, (in fact I have a picture of one), it's dark gray paint scheme was overpainted in dunkel gelb. Older halftracks and artillery pieces could also fall into the same category. Don't forget.... the Germans used all kinds of vehicles in Normandy...including obsolete captured vehicles (based on the Lorraine and Hotchkiss chassis) some were left in the prewar French colors and others were painted in the dark gray or gelb, grun, braun cammo. i'm sure if you can imagine a variation of paint schemes.... the Germans would have had on in thier inventory! I hope this helps! Jeff

It would probably only be incorrect if the paint scheme were on a Panther or King Tiger.
Most of the other German vehicles had a grey scheme painted over with other colors at one time or another.

I even saw in one of my books a photo of a captured Sherman tank in the service of the German army, painted with white crosses. It's BW so I don't know what color it was.

Anything late war produced the answer would be no. This lets out the long barreled Pnzr 4's as well as the Tigers and Panthers. This is mainly what you'ld find in the Normandy area as most of the early war stuff had long since died on the Eastern front.

Then you are A OK! Kubelwagen driven into France between 1940 and 42, gets repainted and there ya go!
You could even leave the interior grey if you wanted.
Cheers
