Hi,
Can anybody help me. I've recently purchased a number of US artillery kits from ebay recently ( 2x Italeri #246 M109; Italeri M107; Italeri M110A1; Airfix 155mm Howitzer all in 1/35th which are pretty rare kits). Anyway, one of them is the Italeri M109 #246. I was trawling through the web to find some aftermarket parts for what Italeri refer to as the G model M109 when I came across perthmilitarymodelling.com where Terry Ashley has done a review on a few resin kits from warrior scale models. They are # WAMW006 Turret Interior; WAMW007 Detail accessory set; WAMW011 Fighting Compartment (apparently, formerly KMC kits) & all refer to the A1 /A2 version but I'm still interested in buying them.
Can anybody point me in the right direction of where to buy these great products, please?
I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to help me.
Thanks.
Joe.

Trakz (VLS) has released a "M109 A2 Turret interior Detail & Accessory Set" (TX0048) as well :
http://www.netmerchants.co.uk/product.php/11832/0/m109_a2_turret_interior
I believe it's a reboxing of the same set as they also make a " M-109A1/A2 Detail & Accessory Set" (TX0049) and a "
M109/A1/A2 Lower Fighting And Drivers Compartment Set" (TX0050), and Warriors belongs to VLS...

Hi guys,
I've been interested in buying the Trakz rerelease but also only found no. 48 and 49 listed. Perhaps no. 50 is sold out again?
BTW: Does anybody know how big difference there is between the A1 and A2 interior of the real thing?
Cheers,
/E

They are basically the same. An A1 is a rebuilt/upgraded M109 incorporating the new, longer barrel and other improvements. The A2 was a new-build version of the same.

eBay maybe ?
...or some rather obscure Korean online store (at your own risk ) :

You'll find pics of the parts here :

You're swinging that bat again, Gino. The M109A1 was the first long tube M109. The M109A2 did away with the swim curtain inflation system and added the ballistic cover over the sight on the turret roof. It also added the additional ammo storage to the rear of the turret. The M109A3 were M109A1s brought up to A2 standards. A2s were not new builds of A1s.

True....in any case the interior set is good up through the A3 version. There were some minor changes thereafter and of course a major change witrh the A6
To the original question....VN saw the original M109. The interior set will be fine for that version.
Osprey has a great book on the M109 which gives the complete history and lots of pictures from 1960 to 2005
I don't think....(maybe late in the war) the A1/A2 saw action there.

What's up with that? I don't see anything contradictory in Gino's post. This is the second post I've seen form you mocking Gino. For one thing, Osprey book or no, some A2s were rebuilt A1s. The A3 designation came later to distinguish them from factory built A2s. It was a moot point as both were the same.

I was CO of an M-109A1 battery immendiately after the conversion from the M-109's. As I recall the biggest change in the interior between the two models was the projo tray and rammer.
In the M-109, The projo tray was a hinged afair that swung down from the back of the turret and lined up with the breech at a preset loading elevation. The rammer was attached to the tray.
On the M-109A1, the tray and rammer were redesigned and attached to the gun, allowing the gun to be loaded at varying elevations. It also removed a massive bit of clutter from the fighting compartment. From what I can tell from various pics I have seen, the tray and rammer have been redesigned a couple of times since, but the location on the gun has stayed fairly constant.
Semper Fi,
Dave

While on the topic of M109s a couple of questions...
1. When were the flotation screens on the hull top in front of the turret ring removed? Would any basic M109s in the late 1960s have them removed?
2. Can the Barrel Depot BD35014 M126 155mm Howitzer barrel be used for a basic M109? The barrel states it is for the M109G....but that should only pertain to the baffles and not the barrel...correct?

Hi,
I'm not sure of the answer to your first question but the barrel you need for a 1960's version is the one from barrel depot #35014. This is the only barrel seen during Vietnam...probably!
It is a little confusing as the photo on their website doesn't look quite right. There is an add on brass piece to finish it off nicely. At the moment it looks like Thors Hammer!
So, the M109G in Italeri #246 is just an M109.

Actually there are other differences with the M109G....they used both the standard muzzle brake and a German developed version. The M109G also used an M113 style commander's cupola with either a .50 Cal or an MG3. The final visible modification on the basic M109 was the addition of the 76 mm Wegmann grenade dischargers on the turret.
Thanks for your info.

To the best of my recollection, the M-109's in Kilo Battery, 4th Battalion, 11th Marines did not have flotation gear. They were located in the Northern Artillery Contonement, north of DaNang in 1970.
The M-109A1'a in Lima Battery, 4th Battalion, 10th Marines did not have flotation gear on them in 1973 - 1974. We were located at Camp Lejeune, NC.

Thanks Dave,
Would the floation gear on the Kilo Battery 109s have been removed at the unit level or would they have been issued like that?
I am looking at building a Canadian M109 circa 1969 and I can't tell exactly if the gear was removed or not if my references.
When the floation gear was removed other than the curved portion of the gear on the hull top being removed were there any other tell tale signs?
Thanks again.

I am almost certain the M-109's were issued like that.
I know for sure the M-109A1's were issued without the floats and rubber duckies, etc.

Dave,
Thanks again. The Canadian M109s were purchased new in 1967....I'll keep searching for a top down image of the hull. Knowing Canadian AFVs...nothing is off the shelf and they probably had the flotation gear removed.

Hi everybody,
I just wanted to let people know that I managed to acquire the VLS Trakz Lower Fighting & Drivers Compartment (TX0050) from a fellow user of this site who goes by the callsign afv_rob. The Turret interior & detail set (TX0048 & TX0049) are on their way from michtoy in the USA. So, I am a very happy bunny right now!
Rob, you really are a true gentleman! Thankyou very much indeed.

Hell I served on short and long tubers and can't tell you crap about them! other than they are real loud and I once broke a spade while popping a 9 bagger! I repeat a 9 bagger!
You got to love us USAFAD/USAFAG guys! we were spoiled.
Did I also mention that I was the hombre that made the molds and cast the Trakz kits?
Great kit and nowhere to be found, I have tons of parts for the two conversions and don't even know if I have a complete set.

Only the Turret interior and basic exterior detail set are available now. The lower hull interior is OOP and very hard to find!
