Hi all
This will be my first build log so go easy on me. I don't have any detailed references on the Ontos except Squadron's Armor in Vietnam which has a few pics, so it will be an OOB build. I'll leave the reviews and rivet counting to the experts.
First, here are a few pics of the kit itself. On first impression for the $17 I paid it looks pretty decent. Academy have put all the knockout marks on the inside of parts and there are very few sink holes or flash. The tracks are very supple and well detailed for vinyl, maybe they used a new formula. There is no interior or engine, something for the AM manufacturers to come up with, but like I said it's a pretty cheap kit. The recoilless rifles' barrells are molded in one piece and look good. However, they cannot be displayed open which is a shame because one of the figures looks ready to load a round in. The figures are above average for Academy who are not noted for great figures. They do have prominent seam lines on them and will need some clean up. There is only one set of decals and unfortunately they do not give any information about that Ontos in the painting guide. I'd have to assume it was used in Vietnam.
All in all for the price it's a step up for Academy, but we'll see what the experts have to say.
I'll be starting tomorrow, so if you're an Ontos expert, your input would be more than welcome.

Looks great, especially the RR barrels --- ahhh, joy, molded in a single piece so no seams to fill!! Cannot tell you how this will speed up the build!!!
Can't wait to get my paws on this one.
Thanks for taking and posting the pix, Brett.
Regards and Aloha,
Johnny B.

Thanks Frenchy for the link.
Progress so far. No dramas at the moment, everything went smoothly. I had a spare jerry can bracket left over from my Sheridan PE set so I used that instead of the kit part which looks way too small. By the way, does anyone know if the jerry can carried water or fuel?
Will post some photos tomorrow. Should have the hull complete by then and maybe get started on the recoilless rifles.

I will be following this build with great interest, as I plan to add a couple of these kits to the stash, one to build right away, and the other to save for any future diorama ideas that I may have.
Frenchy, again, thanks for the link, saved for future reference...

Once again Frenchy thanks for the links, they were a big help.
Ran into some problems yesterday. They are as follows:
1. Rear mudguards are too short by about 1.5mm.
2. Front light guard PE doesn't take into account that both light guards are different sizes thus it makes it difficult to bend them to make them look both even (both PE light guards are made the same size).
3. Muffler guard PE doesn't mate up well. Also, the mesh they used from site http://www.academy.co.kr/ssCartimate/itemDetail.jsp?cid=9&iid=789&orderBy=serial%20ASC,%20iid%20DESC&imgMode=N&type=1 is different from the kit mesh. The kit mesh is much finer and incorrect. If you look at the instructions PE1 should be a semi circle. This is impossible to do if you want to connect it to PE7, the conical shaped mesh. You have to bend PE1 into nearly a circle and still there is a gap.
4. The tools which sit in the bracket above the muffler just seem to sit there. I think they need a strap to tie them down.
Having noted all these negative points, I still think it will look pretty good once finished. You might be wiser to wait for an AM PE set. The Academy set is not up to scratch.
Finally, looking at photos of the Ontos it seems the RRs are a different colour, is this correct? Any info on this would be appreciated.

Hi Brett
To me your kit muffler guard mesh looks much more accurate than the one shown on Academy website (maybe a pre-production kit ?) .
Here you can see the tool rack straps (from svsm.org) :

As you can see the building stage is just about complete. I've left the wheels off, I like to paint them seperately. The RRs are a bit fiddly to construct and care should be taken to align them correctly. In my haste to finish off the model the bottom two rifles don't sit in the travel lock yet so a little twisting and brute force will be required .
According to the instructions the whole thing should be painted in OD. I just hope they are right
Now on with the show.

I'm afraid they are not, as the Ontos was used by the USMC...AFAIK Vietnam Marine vehicles were painted semi-gloss or lusterless forest green...According to the instructions the whole thing should be painted in OD. I just hope they are right
You can notice the difference with an Army M113 (BTW this one at the Patton Museum has the kit markings) :
It's the also the one pictured in the svsm.org walkaround.
A few more info about the Ontos :

The "tac mark" (the red triangle with the object in the middle) is from the 3rd Marine Division. They were in the northern parts of I Corps in Vietnam.

That is correct. As I recall, the 106's had a parkerized finish (flat black) most were pretty well worn after years of work in the field with the parkerized finish worn off the stainless steel barrels, breeches, handles, etc. The same is true for the spotting rifles. The amount of wear should be different on each rifle, since they were individually changed out for maintenance.

Another note on color....touch ups which were done by maintenance in VN were usauly in Army OD as the USMC Green usaully was not available. Some of the VN semi gloss OD as touchup on the fenders etc. would be another good touch!!

Oh man, that was lucky. Frenchy once again to the rescue. Can I get this colour - semi-gloss forest green in either Tamiya acrylic or Gunze laquer? I'll check out my LHS.
Jorge, I used leftover straps from my Sheridan PE set.
David thanks for the info about the RRs. I wished I had gotten that information sooner as I would have painted the RRs seperately and then glued them to the "turret". By the way, what does Parkerized mean? The Ontos on youtube does have very dark barrels, I think flat black is correct, but it has almost a metallic sheen to it.
Mike, would the touch-ups be brushed on and can I use Tamiya OD.
Thanks to all for the information. I should have known Academy would stuff up on something basic...like the paint scheme.
I'll be doing some preshading today and will post pics later tonight.

Was just looking into Parkerization and found this on Wikipedia.
So with ageing the black could become slighly greenish? And I was wondering if oil was applied to the RRs since they seem to have a sheen to them or is that the natural appearance?
Quoted Text
Zinc phosphating results in a non-reflective, light- to medium-gray finish. Manganese phosphating produces a medium- to dark-gray or black finish. Iron phosphating produces a black or dark gray finish similar to manganese phosphating. The grain size of the zinc phosphating is usually the smallest among the three processes, providing a more appealing cosmetic appearance in many applications. Many firearms that are Parkerized turn to a light greenish-gray color within a few years, as the coating ages, with the protective coating remaining intact. Cosmoline, especially, interacting with Parkerizing, can cause the highly-desired and attractive greenish-gray patina to develop on firearms that are stored in armories.
Manganese and iron phosphating coatings are usually the thickest electrochemical conversion coatings, being thicker than electrochemical conversion coatings such as zinc phosphating and bluing.
None of the electrochemical conversion coating finishes are painted coatings, but chemically become part and parcel of the metal surface to which they are applied.
As for all electrochemical conversion coatings, the Parkerized surface must be completely covered with a light coating of oil to maximize corrosion and wear resistance, primarily through reducing wetting action and galvanic action. A heavy oil coating is unnecessary and undesirable for achieving a positive grip on Parkerized metal parts.
So with ageing the black could become slighly greenish? And I was wondering if oil was applied to the RRs since they seem to have a sheen to them or is that the natural appearance?

OK.....here are the paint matches for FS 34052 USMC Green,
Gunze - 65, PolyScale - 505296 or Model Master Acryl 4724
If you are trying to cross reference paint, here is a good link
http://www.paint4models.com/paintchart/paintconversionchart20100101.html#
As far as the OD touch up, the better match to VN era OD is Tamiya XF-74. As for application....yes....brush or spray were both used.
Hope that helps!!

Sprayed the model last night. First, I preshaded the hull and painted the RRs steel. I'm not sure if this had an effect when I sprayed over it later. The hull is painted in Marine Corp green and the RRs were painted flat black with a touch of green thrown in. Next step will be applying decals and then a coat of Model Masters Acryl gloss clear. Then I'll start with the filters using oils. To save time I drain the oils on paper then mix it with lighter fluid. I spray on the filters one after another. Doing it this way I find I don't have to wait a day for each filter to dry.
