Hello,
After finishing some projects I decided that's time for something new.
So I want the present my new project to you. This is the box, I will build the AVAC version.
This time not straight OOTB, but with PE, figures and some other stuff. I want to make this a special one, because the Vietnam period interest me and this is a nice kit to build and to make special.
The extra sets for the kit.
Yesterday evening I started with the interior. The first PE is simple to attach.
I will paint the interior with Tamiya Sky, I have found some information on this site and I have some books about the Vietnam war with pictures but most are black-whtie pictures.
I hope you like this project.
Grtz

Hi Joh,
Like the other guys I will also be following this one. I dont have this particular kit; I have the Tamiya version, but I do have all the after-market products & I'm interested in how you get on.
By the way, the acronym is ACAV which stands for Armored Cavalry Assualt Vehicle. But you knew this anyway.
Good luck with the build, my friend.
Joe.

don't take this as anything negative, but I see a couple errors Tamiya did! The transmission looks nothing like that, but much closer in size and shape to a conventional G.M. Turbo 400 automobile transmission. Also the water steer gear box was rarely installed on tracks headed to Vietnam. Later M113's used a completely different transmission that is more like the one in the MBT, but about 1/4th the size. The transmission that Tamiya uses looks like the very old TX 200, and very few were actually used in T.O. & E. units. Lastly the transmission was shipped in bare aluminium, and unless the factory painted them nobody else did.

I'll email you later about the Tamiya version & you can put me straight on what I have to do to make it right.
Thanks mate.

No problem Joe, beter to ask than to find out later that you needed the information and not asked for it.
Gary, thanks for the information but this is the Academy kit, not Tamiya. I know something about the errrors but in my case, the motorpart will not been seen if I'm finished, only the interior will be visible because I've planned to left open the hatch on the hull and the backdoor (hope this are the rigth words because English is not my first langauge)
In the meantime I have finished the engine and started with the benches where new PE will come.

Joh,
Please try to show us some photos of the interior with the photo-etch parts when you have built it.
This is the part I'm really interested in as I want to show off the interior of mine aswell.
Good luck.

Joh,
You won't be disappionted with this kit.I have bought it probably a half of dozen times. It has the best interior and and the figures and extra accessories make it the biggest bang for your buck.I still have two I only used the interior for Tamiya desert versions.
Keep posting.

^ Agreed, this is one of THE BEST M113 kits there is out there.
I've built quite a few versions of it and it never gets old. Enjoy it!

I have the Academy kit somewhere in the ever growing pile! The Tamiya kit did it all wrong if anybody needs to know. Basicly they used the gasoline fueled verson, but the transmission looks like a TX1000. The other looks similar to a TX200; which would make the hull being built prior to 1964. The Correct engine would be a Detroit Deisel 6-53 series, but strangely enough there were a few built with a Cummins six cylinder just like the one in the pickup truck (probably a prototype that never went anywhere). The ones that were used in Desert Storm should have the X200 transmission; which is a completely different animal from all the others. Also Tamiya used the Chrysler 361" engine.
I have three M106 kits for a future build on a 3/4 CAV dio, but have not opened any of them for a look see. Perhaps they got that one right!

Most ACAV's were painted a very light green inside (think it was called sea foam green), but I have seen a few done in gloss white

But, if you don't show the engine from the Tamiya kits, are there more problems? I do have 2 Tamiya M113 in stock and I want to build them also, but if I close the engine part, what will be the problem then? I have looked the last days for interior photo's and what I see is a lot of different interiors, so isn't also that the made field conversions?
I'm interested in your opions about this.
Thanks!

Now I maybe dead wrong here, but I think there is a difference in the exhaust pipe between the deisel and the gasoline fueld M113's. Otherwise just go for it.

But first this project, the Academy M113 and that's enough work for the fortcomming period.

You're wrong. There is no difference between the exhaust for a M113 and a M113A1. They changed it to the flapper style on the M113A2, that didn't happen untill the late 1970s.

believe it or not there is a photo floating around of a U.S. CAV unit using one with the Cadillac Gauge turret mounted on it. Was down south, and may have been 1/4 CAV or 3/4 CAV, or maybe even the 11th CAV. I never saw one during my tour

Hi Joh , Gary and mates heres a photo of what I'm meaning
The photo is from the book " Year Of The Tigers " the tour book of the Fifth Australian Regiment , and shows M113s and Centurion tanks during the battle of Binh Ba , Phuc Toy province around the 6/7th June 1969 .
If you search Binh Ba 5RAR you'll find story behind the photo .

How are you mate? I hope you're keeping well!
Are there 2 barrels in the turret of that first APC?
Joe.

if memory serves me right they used two Browning 30 caliber machine guns. Anybody here notice the subtile differences in the track hulls from the one in the kit? But I know they did use the one in the kit over there with some ever so slight differences on the outside.

Hello,
Nice discussions, but this time an update from the project. I started with the first PE parts and it's a lot of work to get it on the right position. Sometimes I asked myself why using PE, but if it's on it's place then it looks beter most of the times then without, special when you want to make a detailled project.
Some photo's from the interior.
This just the start, more will follow.
