Don´t know where you get this from. Im living in Sweden and we had at least 4 months of darkness, snow and minus degrees and the grass was still there and green. Ive seen guys from America posting this before, and also stating the grass should be yellow in winter. Not so. Not even when covered in snow for months.

Not so either. Thumbing a lift is quite common all over the British Isles and Ireland.

Proving once again my ignorance has no bounds.

Perhaps my fevered mind replaced Europe with England?

The point is hand gestures do not have universal meanings, and what may be common now after 60 years of exposure to Hollywood movies, might not have been common back then.
