Hi guys,
I am trying to go into smaller scale armor (1/48 & 1/72) so I got myself the Revell Tiger E. Not a bad kit but not entirely accurate (mostly the turret). The biggest problem though is the lack of zimmerit. So i decided to try and make it myself. This is my first attempt at making zimmerit in any scale. Anyway I intend to make this a knocked out Tiger, hence the big hole in the hull side and some missing patches of zimmerit.
Heres the progress so far
I used plasto putty to make the zimmerit.
Base coated in tamiya red brown
Then Tamiya dark yellow
Then red brown and olive green
I will update as i progress, tracks and wheels next.
Any tips or observations welcome

The build appears to have progressed well and I am sure that someone will mention that the Zimmerit is over scale. That being said, it is effective and far superior to my first attempt at creating it on an old Airfix Tiger. I believe that there is a manufacturer who makes 1/72 PE zimmerit. Someone used it during the a Camapaign on a Revel Tiger I but I can't recall the manufacturer's name. You also done a very nice job with the camo.

EDIT: Just happened to find this feature on JayPee using the zimmerit on a Trumpeter Tiger. 1/72 Tiger Feature.

This is looking great, i think the zimmerit looks good, yes its probably not to scale but as long as your happy thats all that counts, personaly i think it cant be easy getting it to scale on something so small. My preferred method is to use the putty or squadron filler then i roll a screw accross it.
looking forward to more progress

Thanks for the comments guys
Yeah getting the zimmerit to scale in 1/72 is very difficult. I just couldn't justify getting a pe set for what is essentially a practice kit. My tool for the zim was a cut off of pe fret taped to a file and used as a kind of scriber!
Im just not looking forward to the tracks. would of prefered a band track in this scale and not link and lenght. the links are tiny!
Well hopefully an update tomorrow when I tackle the tracks
Cheers Matt

I actually grabbed one of the Revell Tigers to give a shot at braille scale. I have a few other 1/72 scale tanks in my collection and I can tell you this much, those individual or link and length tracks are far better than most of the rubber band style tracks. The rubber tracks are generally overly chunky and smoothed out detail-wise. The DML DS tracks are about the best I've seen of that type this far, but they too suffer from out-of-scale thickness. I have also seen some pe tracks from ACE, but even when layered they look a quite thin and lack the 3 dimensional depth of the real life counterparts. In the end the tracks you have are the best for scale accuracy, they're just going to be a necessary evil
By the way, I can only imagine what a challenge creating that zimmerit had to have been!

I used the trumpeter tiger. Great wee kit. I've a full (or nearly full) set of the Eduard for Hasegawa 1/72 zimm PE left over as it was bought from hannants on a 2 for 1 deal.
I've got the tank on my desk here. I think your home made zimm has a better "zimm" feel to it. Plus the PE stuff is hard to make look like it is part of the tank rather than some metal plate stuck onto it. Watching with interest.
